SUMMARY:SEA AGM - Sunday 5th July 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Existential Analysis Annual General Meeting 2026 \nDate & Time: Sunday 5th July 2026\, 11am UK Time. \nTo be held online via Zoom. \nOPEN TO MEMBERS ONLY \nWe warmly invite all members of the Society to attend this year’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday 5th July 2026 at 11am.  The AGM will once again be held online via Zoom. \nAttending the AGM is free.  However\, since it is ‘members only’\, we ask attendees to book online so that we can monitor numbers and grant ‘dial-in’ access.  Please book your place using the link at the end of this notice.  Details to access the Zoom meeting will be distributed to registrants the day before the AGM. \nThis notice sets out relevant information with respect to the following points of business for the upcoming AGM: \n\nNominations to membership of the Executive Committee of the Society\nRequest for volunteers\nRequest for motions\nRequest for topics for the Open Forum\nProcedural details on how to make nominations\, propose motions\, etc.\n\nNominations to the Executive Committee \nNominations for membership of the Society’s Executive Committee are invited\, as we continue seeking to broaden the range of voices contributing to the Society’s management.   Being a member of the Executive Committee offers an opportunity to work on the Society’s various projects and to influence its future direction\, so please do come forward if you wish to be involved. \nIn particular\, we are seeking nominations for the position of Vice Chair.  The role involves the following: \n  \n\n To provide support to the Chair as needed\, acting also as a sounding board and advisor to the Chair on current issues within the organisation.\n\n  \n\n To deputise for the Chair at meetings (Executive Committee\, CEC\, etc) and on other occasions when called upon to do so or when the Chair is unable to attend.\n\n  \n\n To undertake or take a lead on key projects\, issues or activities that may fall outside the remit of other Executive Committee roles. \n\nThe Committee would like to thank the incumbent\, Derek Bean\, as he steps down from this position.  Derek has worked tirelessly as Vice Chair\, not merely in support of the Chair\, but also in taking on a significant role in various important projects such as the revision of our Standards of Education and Training and the quinquennial review of our accredited training programme at Regent’s University London.  Derek has been a consistent voice on the Committee in support of making both the SEA and existential psychotherapy more accessible and inclusive.  We are therefore grateful that Derek is seeking re-election as an ordinary member of the Executive Committee\, so that his experience and compassionate perspective will endure. \nWe note that this year’s AGM sees the current Chair\, Paola Pomponi\, step down and the Chair-Elect\, Matthew Henson\, take over.  The Executive Committee thanks Paola most deeply for all the work she has done and sacrifices she has made for the Society during her two-term tenure.  She has led the Committee and the Society with passion\, resolve and tenacity\, guiding our responses to events such as Covid-19\, navigating the changing regulatory landscape\, and improving our policies on diversity\, equality and inclusion.  Paola has led the way on various significant projects during her tenure\, including the overhaul of the Society’s website and related architecture and the publication of the hugely successful ‘Dialogues’ series\, and she has promoted and expanded the reach of the Society through\, amongst other things\, appearing at international conferences such as FETE.  She has always been willing to ‘get her hands dirty’ in support of other Committee members and help out when needed in ways perhaps not expected of Chair.  For these and many more reasons we wish to say – thank you Paola.  We are again grateful\, as with Derek\, that Paola is seeking re-election as an ordinary Committee member\, so that her experience and drive will continue to serve the Society.  Of course\, we also look forward with excitement to Matthew taking over as Chair and wish him\, on behalf of the Society\, the greatest of luck in doing so. \nShould you wish to nominate someone to the Executive Committee please read the details below on how to do so.  If you would like more information on what’s involved in being a member of the Executive Committee\, please email the Secretary at the address below.  Note that nominations for membership of the Executive Committee may only be made for individuals who have been members of the Society for at least one year.  Nominations must be received by the Secretary 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society.  Such nominations will be subject to a vote at the AGM. \nVoluntary positions \nBeyond membership of the Executive Committee\, we are always looking for volunteers to be involved in other ways\, such as being part of subcommittees that carry out the work of the Society on specific projects or areas of special interest.  These include Events\, the Student Hub\, the Conference\, and so on.  Any new joiner would of course be supported appropriately as they take on any new role. \nProposals for motions \nAlongside nominations to the Executive Committee\, proposals for motions to be discussed and voted on at the AGM are also requested. Again\, details on how to do this are provided below.  Proposals for motions carry a deadline of being received 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society. \nOpen Forum Topics \nFollowing the formal AGM proceedings\, an Open Forum will take place where members can pose questions and challenges for broader discussion.  Members are invited to forward topics they would like raised during the Open Forum in advance to the Secretary (the deadline and guidance on how to do this is provided below). \nAll communications relating to the AGM\, including proposed motions\, nominations\, and open forum topics\, should be made to the Secretary at: \nsecretary@existentialanalysis.org.uk \n WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE DAY \nFurther information now follows on nominations for Chairperson\, the Executive Committee\, proposing motions\, and proposing topics for the Open Forum: \nNOMINATIONS TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: If you would like to make a nomination for membership of the Executive Committee\, including for Vice Chair\, please send the Nomination Form (link below) to the SEA Secretary\, to arrive no later than 11am on Sunday 14th June 2026.   Note that nominees must have been members of the Society for at least one year\, and require both a nominator and seconder.  Nominations will be voted on at the AGM.  Should you wish to nominate someone and would like to know more about what’s involved\, you are invited to email the SEA Secretary for further details. \nLink to: Executive Committee Membership Nomination Form \nMOTIONS: If you would like to make a motion for discussion at the AGM\, then please send the Motion Form (below) to the SEA Secretary.  The motion will need to be seconded by another SEA member\, and will be set as an agenda item for the AGM. The deadline for receiving motions for the AGM is 11am on Sunday 14th June 2026. \nLink to: Motion Form \nOPEN FORUM: A members open forum will follow the AGM.  If you would like to discuss a specific topic\, please send brief details to the SEA secretary by Sunday 14th June 2026.

Ideal candidates will be comfortable with digital platforms\, detail-oriented\, and committed to supporting our vibrant existential community.  The Committee would like to thank the incumbent\, Serena Fianco\, as she steps down from this position\, for her hard work\, tenacity and commitment in supporting our members over the years. \nPlease read the details below on how to nominate someone to the Executive Committee\, and if you would like more information on what’s involved in being a member of the Executive Committee\, please email the Secretary at the address below.  Note that nominations for membership of the Executive Committee (including the position of Chair) may only be made for individuals who have been members of the Society for at least one year.  Nominations must be received by the Secretary 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society.  Such nominations will be subject to a vote at the AGM.  \n  \nVoluntary positions \nBeyond membership of the Executive Committee\, we are always looking for volunteers to be involved in other ways\, such as being part of subcommittees that carry out the work of the Society on specific projects or areas of special interest.  We are currently looking for someone to join the Hermeneutic Circular Subcommittee\, with the aim of taking over the editorship of that publication when the incumbent\, Andrew Miller\, steps down over the coming months.  Any new joiner would of course be supported appropriately as they take on this role.  A summary of the kind of duties and skills involved is available here.  The Committee would like to thank Andrew for the decade of his thoughtful and committed stewardship of this rich\, vibrant and much-loved publication. \n  \nProposals for motions \nAlongside nominations to the Executive Committee\, proposals for motions to be discussed and voted on at the AGM are also requested. DESCRIPTION:The Society for Existential Analysis Annual General Meeting 2022 \nDate & Time: Sunday 20th March 2022\, 11am UK Time. \nTo be held online via Zoom. \nOPEN TO MEMBERS ONLY \nWe warmly invite all members of the Society to attend this year’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday 20th March 2022 at 11am.  The AGM will once again be held online via Zoom. \nAttending the AGM is free.  However\, since it is ‘members only’\, we ask attendees to book online so that we can monitor numbers and grant ‘dial-in’ access.  Please book your place using the link at the end of this notice.  Details for the Zoom meeting will be distributed to registrants the day before the AGM. \nThis year’s meeting is of particular importance as it will see the election of the Chair of the Society’s Executive Committee.  Under our Constitution\, the Chair serves a term of three years\, and election of a new Chair takes place at the beginning of the third year of that term.  This is the third year as Chair for our incumbent\, Paola Pomponi\, and she is seeking re-election for one further term.  However\, nominations from other members of the Society for this position are welcome.  Should someone other than Paola be elected\, they will serve as Chair-Elect for one year until Paola steps down and they take over as Chair.  Details are given below on how to make a nomination for Chair. \nBeyond the position of Chair\, nominations for membership of the Society’s Executive Committee are invited more broadly\, as we continue seeking to broaden the range of voices contributing to the Society’s management.  Being a member of the Executive Committee offers an opportunity to work on the Society’s various projects and to influence its future direction\, so please do come forward if you wish to be involved.  Please read the details below on how to nominate someone to the Executive Committee\, and if you would like more information on what’s involved in being a member of the Executive Committee\, please email the Secretary at the email address below. \nNote that nominations for membership of the Executive Committee\, including the Chair\, may only be made for individuals who have been members of the Society for at least one year.  Such nominations will be subject to a vote at the AGM.  In addition\, there are several existing members of the Executive Committee that have been nominated for re-election this year\, the list of whom is available here and below.   \nAlongside nominations to the Executive Committee\, proposals for motions to be discussed and voted on at the AGM are also requested. Again\, details on how to do this are provided below\, but please note that both nominations to the Committee and proposals for motions carry a deadline of being received 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society. \nFollowing the formal AGM proceedings\, an Open Forum will take place where members can pose questions and challenges for broader discussion.  Members are invited to forward topics they would like raised during the Open Forum in advance to the Secretary (the deadline and guidance on how to do this is provided below).   \nAll communications relating to the AGM\, including proposed motions\, nominations\, and open forum topics\, should be made to the Secretary at: \nsecretary@existentialanalysis.org.uk \n WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE DAY – PLEASE BOOK USING THE LINK BELOW \nFurther information now follows on nominations for Chairperson\, making other nominations for the Executive Committee\, proposing motions\, and proposing topics for the Open Forum: \nNOMINATIONS FOR CHAIRPERSON: If you would like to make a nomination for Chairperson\, please send the Chairperson Nomination Form (link below) to the SEA Secretary\, to arrive no later than 11am on Sunday 27th February 2022.   Note that nominees must have been members of the Society for at least one year\, and require both a nominator and seconder.  Should you require further details on what being Chairperson involves\, please contact the Secretary. \nTo aid the Membership in their decision-making\, nominees for Chairperson are asked to provide a brief statement (max. 300 words) to support their candidacy that will be distributed to the Membership in advance of the AGM.  This statement should outline the nominee’s suitability for the role\, and offer some indication of how they intend to execute the office should they be successful.  The statement should be sent to the Secretary\, to arrive no later than midday on Sunday 6th March 2022.  This will allow time for such statements to be collated and distributed to the Membership prior to the AGM.   \nLink to: Chairperson Nomination Form \nNOMINATIONS TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: If you would like to make a nomination for membership of the Executive Committee\, please send the Nomination Form (link below) to the SEA Secretary\, to arrive no later than 11am on Sunday 27th February 2022.   Note that nominees must have been members of the Society for at least one year\, and require both a nominator and seconder.  Nominations will be voted on at the AGM.  Should you wish to nominate someone and would like to know more about what’s involved\, you are invited to email the SEA Secretary for further details. SUMMARY:DIALOGUES on MADNESS and WISDOM. 8th February\, 7-9pm UK time on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:DIALOGUES on MADNESS and WISDOM.  \nIn Conversation with R.D. Laing.\nR.D. Laing & Vincenzo Caretti.  Edited by Miles Groth and Danilo Serra. \n      NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON \n  \nYou are invited to meet the authors of the forthcoming \nSEA Dialogue no. 4.\n  \n  \nAfter more than forty years\, Vincenzo Caretti’s account of conversations with the Scottish psychiatrist\, R.D. Laing\, has finally been translated from Italian into English. Earlier translations in French\, German and Dutch have been out of print for quite a while. For that reason\, this English translation is of special importance. It was edited by Miles Groth\, the daseinsanalyst and existential analyst living in New York. \nFor many years now a psychoanalyst\, the probing questions of Caretti\, who was then a young therapist in training only in his early 20s but welcomed by Laing for a week of discussions\, is as fresh and insightful now as it was when first published in 1979. The translation by Danilo Serra\, a brilliant young Italian scholar in philosophy and the humanities\, is superb and brings to life the wit and subtlety of the famous radical psychotherapist and author of now classic works of social phenomenology on the family and schizophrenia. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the birth of Laing. \nThe topics of the conversations range from the Bible to Zen\, Freud and Jung\, the fate of the family and schizophrenia\, language\, silence and time\, and the place of young people and women in the rapidly changing world ushered in  by the Sixties. Their final conversation is characterized by Caretti as “a profession of faith” on the part of Laing. We have in these dialogues an illuminating portrait of the many sides of R.D. Laing the man\, the thinker\, and the therapist. \n Vincenzo Caretti (1953)\, is psychoanalyst and professor of Dynamic Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Department of Human Science of the LUMSA University of Rome. His research fields cover the traumatic experiences in developmental age\, the onset of the antisocial/psychopathic personality disorder\, the factors of change in psychotherapy of self regulation. \n Miles Groth\, PhD\, is full Professor (Emeritus) in the Department of Psychology at Wagner College\, New York. He is co-founder with Tamás Fazekas and President of the American Daseinsanalytic Institute (2021). Dr. Groth has been in private practice as a daseinsanalyst since 1985. He is the author of seven books and many articles on psychotherapy and Continental philosophy. He has lectured residents in psychiatry on integrating psychodynamic psychotherapy with traditional in-patient treatment. \n Danilo Serra ( 1991)\, PhD\, is the author of several books on topical philosophical issues and numerous articles in philosophy journals. Dr. Serra carries out research in the areas of Heideggerian Philosophy\, Poetic Phenomenology and Landscape Aesthetics. He is a member of the American Daseinsanalytic Institute (ADI). \n

SUMMARY:2021 SEA Annual Conference - "You couldn’t possibly understand!"
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Conference topic has been brewing for me for some time.  I have been moved by my own experiences of clients feeling it is simply not possible for “you to understand what I’ve been through!”  And I have also felt encouraged and challenged by the feedback from our very first Census\, that now is the time. \nThe response from people wishing to present has been overwhelming.  We have incredibly creative and thought-provoking presentations and workshops covering a diverse range of topics from: \nAlix Velasco ~ Chris Goto-Jones ~ Cristalle Hayes ~ Devang Vaidya ~ Dida Mitchell & Jyoti Nanda ~ Elv Moody ~ Haran Rasalingam & Maria Galani ~ Juli Jolly ~ Leanne Prosvic ~ Manu Bazzano ~ Marc Boaz ~ Marium Akhund ~ Niki D ~ Paola Pomponi & Serena Fianco ~ Rafał Miętkiewicz ~ Stella Duffy & Chris Cleave \nSpeaking to the things that make us all different.  The struggles both therapist and client encounter when the distance between us and our experience feels immense.  The assumptions we make of each other based on the lives we are living.  And the incredible capacity for change\, enlightenment\, and compassion that our differences can bring about. \nWhile there is a universality to our shared humanity\, the human experience is vast and the lenses through which we each experience ourselves myriad. \nNietzsche wrote\, “… Everybody wants the same\, everybody is the same: whoever feels different goes voluntarily into a madhouse.”  True?  But perhaps there is an important counterpoint to note\, that “Freedom means nothing\, unless it means the freedom to be different” (Rubin) \nWe do hope you’ll join us in challenging the status quo.\nShould you have any questions\, please do reach out to me with any questions: theSEAconference@gmail.com and I look forward seeing you on the day. \nTeresa.

SUMMARY:2020 Conference - "This is not what I had planned"
DESCRIPTION:This year’s conference is not what I had originally planned\, I actually had a very different topic in mind; but then again\, so much of my life hasn’t gone according to plan\, so here we are!  This year we invite you to join us in what will be a very different\, but still highly interactive conference experience. \n\n\nWe have a wonderful line-up of speakers and workshop presenters\, bringing with them a wealth of skills\, expertise and life experiences impacted by events that weren’t part of their plan.   Join us as they discuss the changes foisted upon them\, reflect on where they stand with this in the present\, and how these unplanned events have shaped who they are\, and how they practice. \n\nZoe Gelis ~ Tabitha Draper ~ Rosemary Lodge ~ Rafał Miętkiewicz ~ Paul Silver-Myer ~ Maria Galani ~ Magdalen Cheng ~ John Hills ~ Glenn Nicholls ~ Diana Mitchell ~ Devang Vaidya ~ Damien Stewart ~ Chris Goto-Jones… and more \nAccording to Darwin’s Origin of Species\, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives\, nor is it the strongest.  The species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself. \n2020 has thrown many of us off track.  For some\, this year has been truly disastrous\, while others have found a sense of purpose or redirection that may never have otherwise materialised. \nWithin my own practice\, I have noted an increase in a lack of ‘at homeness’ in some of my clients; what John Koenig beautifully coins as Monachopsis: “the subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place\, as maladapted to your surroundings as a seal on a bench… unable to recognise the ambient roar of your intended habitat\, in which you’d be fluidly\, brilliantly\, effortlessly at home.”  In others\, I’ve seen an increase in decisiveness\, fearlessness and determination\, this has been especially true of my trauma and abuse clients. \nHowever\, a global pandemic isn’t typically the thing that throws a spanner in the works of life…   Spanners come in all shapes and sizes\, and in the day to day trenches of life we are impacted by myriad events; death\, divorce\, disaster\, but also new life\, love and opportunity.  We move countries\, we return to forgotten passions\, we become unwell or infirm\, we get promoted\, we let get of the things that are causing us pain\, and we continue to fight for change\, real\, meaningful\, lasting\, change.  Things literally get blown-up or washed out to sea\, we lose money\, and status\, and sometimes we lose our identity\, ourselves… and sometimes\, we find it all anew.  We set out on one path\, and now\, somehow\, find ourselves upon another. \n \n

SUMMARY:The Natural Ease and Resilience of Being. KEN BRADFORD PhD May 30th 6-8pm
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nNatural resilience is the healing expression of authentic presence when we stop talking to ourself and open to experience as it is. The truth is we cannot always trust our mind to see things clearly\, since the human predicament finds us in the position of seeing through a glass darkly: seeing others\, the world and ourself through projections we may not be aware we are projecting. Simultaneously\, the truth is we can always trust the sane nature of our mind\, which is innately open\, clear\, and spontaneously responsive in a compassionate\, healing direction. A vital challenge for existentially-robust therapy is warming-up to\, tuning-in to\, and letting go of habitual patterns that cloud authentic presence. The challenge of recognising authentic presence is opening to the natural freedom and ease of being as such. \n  \n  \nWe cannot make ourself be resilient\, sane or free\, but we can open to a way of being in which resilience\, sanity and freedom come to us. Within the openness of spacious awareness\, we are better able to assist the opening of others. This follow-up experientially-keyed session is devoted to opening to the true\, innately resilient nature of our otherwise distracted mind. Just this is the unconditional basis for practicing the most robust forms of therapy and meditation. \nThe event will take place on ZOOM. A link will be sent to attendees the day before. \nKen Bradford\, PhD is an author\, teacher and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. Formerly\, he maintained a psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay area and was Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University and California Institute of Integral Studies. Publications include numerous articles\, most recently on “Radical Authenticity” and “Existential-Contemplative Therapy”; books: The I of the Other: Mindfulness-Based Diagnosis & the Question of Sanity; and Listening from the Heart of Silence: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy\, Vol. 2  (with John Prendergast). \n Website: www.authenticpresence.net \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants

SUMMARY:Authentic Presence: Buddhist and Existential Perspectives - KEN BRADFORD PhD. May 29th 6-8pm
DESCRIPTION:  \nBoth Existential and Buddhist psychologies recognise an authentic potentiality\, sanity and natural resilience to the human mind. Although in Existential thought\, the notion of “true nature” is debatable and not always clearly understood. Still\, both traditions respect that the mind’s natural openness is obscured by habitual forms of mental-emotional reactivity that become reified into a fixed “me.” The radical thought of Martin Heidegger and still more remarkable insight of the Buddha see through the reification of divided selfhood to the authentically open\, unfettered and free nature of the mind.\nThis evening will explore the Buddha’s 2 key insights into the human condition. 1) We have a deep-seated feeling there is something incomplete or wrong with “me” that leaves us with a sense of discontent and wanting we spend our lives striving to fill. 2) Preoccupied with this striving\, we lose touch with the natural resilience\, innate sense of well-being\, and untethered freedom of our authentic nature. Therapy and meditation are practices of opening ourself to the way things actually are rather than how we (compulsively) think they are. \nThis evening provides a theoretical foundation for Saturday’s follow-up. \nThe event will take place on ZOOM. A link will be sent to attendees the day before. \nKen Bradford\, PhD is an Author\, teacher and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. SUMMARY:SYMPOSIUM May 22nd 7-9pm
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 Shall Not Stop Us.\nSEA Symposiums Are Picking Up Again \n \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nThis is a FREE event. \nMay 22nd @ 7 pm – 9 pm Free \nSpeaker: DEVANG VAIDYA \nTitle: DO THERAPISTS’ EXPERIENCES AS CLIENTS INFLUENCE THEIR PRACTICE? \nIn this symposium we will discuss how our own experiences in therapy as clients may have influenced our decision to become therapists. \nFurther\, our way of practising therapy can be a reflection of what worked  – and did not work – in our own therapy. Our expectations of therapy\, whether they were met or not\, can shape our ethos and style of working with clients. Indeed our entire stance towards therapy can be determined in response to our own therapist’s value system. We don’t often reflect on how much our therapists may have taught us about practising therapy. We are likely to be taking up theoretical\, philosophical\, methodological\, and ethical elements that are resonant – favourably or unfavourably – with our own experiences as clients.   \n  \n \nDevang Vaidya is a person-centred existential psychotherapist based in London. \n  \nThere are limited spaces\, so please register your presence here. \nYou will be sent a ZOOM code or link on the day\, in order to join the meeting. \nIf you are interested in being the next speaker on our Symposium night\, \nplease contact:  events@existentialanalysis.org.uk\n

SUMMARY:CORONAFORUM-6. Thursday 16th April 11am
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our Coronaforum run\, you are invited to join the discussion and share your experience. \n  In recent weeks new challenges have fallen upon us\, not just as therapists\, but as inhabitants of the globe. We are experiencing anxiety\, uncertainty and fear.  We need to keep ourselves and our families safe\, while also continuing to support our clients.  We may need to change or adjust the way we practise and we may need a lot of flexibility to try to set a new routine that meets all different and new demands. \nRather than proposing guidelines or answers\, the SEA is allowing a space where those can be found together\, as a result of discussing and sharing one’s perplexities. \nThe “Coronaforum” is an on-line forum open to all\, although it must be limited to a maximum of 15 attendees.  If demand requires it\, there will be more of these in the future. \nThe “Coronaforum” will be held on-line on the ZOOM.US platform. And it is free. \nPlease register your presence here\, download the free ZOOM.US platform. You will be sent a code or a link on the day\, in order to join the meeting. \n  \n
