SUMMARY:SEA Conference 2024 : 'In the room where it happens"
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nThis year’s Conference will be in person\, with a new online Conference to follow in Easter 2025. \n  \nWe will be bringing you a day of presentations\, workshops and an Open Space Forum based around the practice and utilisation of existential psychotherapy. \nDr Michael R. Montgomery will be delivering the keynote titled “Psychophobia – Epidemic and Cure” exploring what would happen if an existential therapist was allowed to work in the way they wanted\, for however long they wanted\, with whoever they wanted. \nWe will have six presentations and workshops from a collection of new and up and coming speakers covering: \n  \nExistential art therapy\nExistential therapy across cultures\nExistential therapy and poetics\nExistential therapy and nonbinary gender identities\nExistential therapy in the hospital setting\nExistential therapy and the liberating of phenomenological practice\n\nThe afternoon of the Conference will be dedicated to an Open Space Forum where attendees will have the chance to set the agenda and explore topics and themes which matter to them. \nSpace at this year’s event is limited to ensure that we have room to facilitate the experiential and engaging day we want to host. By reflecting on our past and present\, we can gain clarity and perspective to carry our practice confidently into the future\, we will explore: \n– What are the essential tenets that define existential psychotherapy? How do we remain grounded in these foundations while allowing space for growth? \n– How has our understanding of concepts like freedom\, responsibility\, meaning\, isolation\, death anxiety\, and authenticity evolved over time? Which interpretations still hold true and which may need re-thinking? \n– How do we honor the diversity of identities and experiences in our field and clientele? How can we make space for more voices to be heard? \n– What cultural assumptions underpin our theories and methods? How can we adapt to meet changing societal needs while staying true to existential principles? \n– What emerging ideas\, technologies\, therapies\, problems or populations should existential psychotherapists engage with? How do we thoughtfully expand our scope? \n– What is the role of existential psychotherapy in the future? How can we as a community meet humanity’s needs in a changing world? \nThis year’s conference is a chance to reconnect with our roots\, share wisdom\, and envision how existential psychotherapy can continue to enlighten and heal. We will challenge each other\, open up new perspectives\, and come away invigorated by the passion and care this community embodies. We look forward to powerful conversations as we find our way forward together.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nPROTEST!\nThe SEA Annual Conference will take place: Saturday 12th November\nOnline: via Zoom\nAND\nIn-person: NCVO\, 8 All Saints Street\, London\, N1 9RL \n  \nThis year’s line-up is full of personal passion\, therapeutic challenge and opportunities for dialogue and discovery.   Shining light on how we practice in the face of divergent views\, the struggles of uncovering something unsavoury about our clients\, the physical protest of our bodies\, our minds and the want for more connectedness\, more understanding of difference and more tolerance for when our views do not align. \n  \nFINAL PROGRAMME \n  \n \n  \nIn-person registration is open from 9am\, with virtual registration opening up soon thereafter.  The conference will kick off at 9:30\, with the final presentation due to wrap up at 16:30.  After which there will be closing remarks and a short time for discussion and reflection\, before wrapping up at 17:00 and heading across the road to the Thornhill Arms.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we will be attempting to host our first hybrid conference this year\, you’ll notice there are two ticket types for each Membership level: \nONLINE or IN-PERSON. \n Please choose the corresponding ticket type based on your attendance.  This will help plan the catering and the technology. \nAs ever\, if you have any questions\, please email \n theSEAconference@gmail.com \nWe look forward to receiving your expressions of interest and to seeing you on the day.

Gavin ~ Stuart Hanscomb ~ Oded Reitten ~ Michael Worrell ~ Michael Montgomery ~ Marion Steel ~ Manu Bazzano ~ Letizia Orlando ~ Jason Upton ~ Jamie McNulty ~ Jamie Giles ~ Donna Savery ~ Diana Mitchell ~ Devang Vaidya ~ Angelique Vagopoulou & Alja Lah… along with Andrew Lovell & Robert Taylor \nMovement… “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”\nNothing brings me greater joy than dance.  It is my preferred art form\, it is the talent I am most envious of in other people\, it fills my daydreams and is often present in my night-time reveries.  Above all\, it is my absolute favourite means of movement… I feel unshackled and electric\, connected to myself\, at peace with my being\, able to unpick the trauma and sadness woven into my existence and to express the things for which there simply are no words.  It has been argued that body-subjectivity is far more than an awareness of the body’s position in space as it has both dynamic and affective dimensions\, as well as being a fundamentally intersubjective phenomenon.  But dance does not hold dominion over movement\, and movement – especially in the language of therapy – need not be physical at all… \nMusic… In his book Musicophillia: Tales of Music and the Brain\, Oliver Sacks writes:\n            “Music is part of being human. […]  The inexpressible depth of music\, so easy to understand and yet so inexplicable\, is due to the fact that it reproduces all the emotions of our innermost being\, but entirely without reality and remote from its pain. […] Uniquely among the arts\, it is both completely abstract and profoundly emotional.  It has no power to represent anything particular or external\, but it has a unique power to express inner states or feelings.”\nMusic can be overwhelmingly powerful.  It has driven people to the depths of madness and despair and provided the soundtrack for many a misery.  Yet it has also accompanied us through the corridors of joy and love and laughter while providing shelter\, a sense of community and belonging.  I am aware that many existential therapists are\, or were\, musicians\, professional\, amateur or aspirational\, classical\, modern\, eclectic.  As we grow and age\, what music means for us changes; how we hear what we hear\, (if we are able to hear at all) can be profoundly impacted; what we once loved and craved can become intolerable and sounds that once moved us profoundly can become noise that is utterly unbearable.  If music really is …part of being human\, how do we make sense of this in our efforts to understand the human condition? \nMetaphor… “Language is the house of being. In its home human beings dwell”\nFor most of us\, the spoken word is the sole resource we deploy in our work as therapists.  Figurative expression is often used as a way to convey what we want to say\, both to ourselves and to the other.  The use of metaphor in therapy can\, at times be invaluable; facilitating rapport between client and therapist\, enabling space to conceptualise and communicate abstract emotional states and a platform from which to vocalise our suffering for the very first time in a less direct\, and perhaps\, less distressing way.\nHowever\, it can also be a mechanism of avoidance\, a linguistic tool deployed in order to evade and obfuscate the “real issues”\, where one never genuinely has to be present in the therapeutic challenge.  When a common mother tongue is not shared the use of metaphor can dramatically increase the likelihood of misunderstanding or alienation… though it can\, on occasion\, also provide for rather mirthful confusion.  With its potential to both alienate and facilitate\, what place does metaphor have in the landscape of existential practice? \nAs in past years the conference will take place at:\nNCVO: Society Building\, 8 All Saints Street\, London\, N1 9RL\nAnd be followed by drinks across the road at The Thornhill Arms\, all are invited.
