SUMMARY:Experiential-Existential Creative Writing Workgroups - Chris Cleave & Stella Duffy - June 19 & July 3 - 10 am - 2 pm BST
DESCRIPTION:Experiential-Existential Creative Writing Workgroups\nPresented by Chris Cleave & Stella Duffy \n \nWho are the workgroup facilitators? \nStella Duffy and Chris Cleave are third-year doctoral students at NSPC\, with a combined 60 years of writing practice and an understanding of process as the core of that work. \n \n \nChris Cleave’s novels celebrate people’s resilience\, humour\, and capacity for healing. He is the author of four award-winners including the New York Times #1 bestseller\, Little Bee. He teaches writing at the Arvon Foundation and mentors privately. His forthcoming novel\, Minotaur\, explores ambiguity and reconciliation in mother-daughter relationships. His doctoral research is in the experiences that people seek in order to heal themselves outside of formal therapy. \n \n \nStella Duffy is an award-winning writer of 17 novels\, over 70 short stories and 14 plays. She has taught writing for the Arvon Foundation\, Goldsmiths University and Sotheby’s Institute among many others. She worked in devised and physical theatre for many decades and is a yoga teacher\, running monthly yoga for writing workshops. Her doctoral research is in the embodied experience of postmenopause. \n \n \nWhy are we offering these twin workgroups? Because you asked for something more! Following Stella and Chris’s enjoyable and well-attended writing workgroup at the last SEA Conference\, we learned that there is an appetite for a stronger dose of this inspiring and welcoming process that invites therapists of all approaches to connect with themselves and with existential themes through phenomenological and creative writing. So here it is: two lively and dynamic 4-hour groups\, separated by a fortnight for personal reflection. \nWho’s it for? It’s for therapists\, researchers\, their friends and anyone else who might be interested – feel free to share this invitation. You don’t need to ‘be existential’ or to have any writing experience. As experienced novelists and writing tutors\, and trainee existential therapists\, we suggest creative approaches and attunements that work with the individuals and the group on the day\, while you bring your life understanding and your (perhaps much more extensive) experience of connecting with clients. \nWhat will I get out of it? New creative connections with yourself and others. The result of holding this atypical space for this unusual crowd is a unique group energy\, in which we’ve discovered that new meanings and possibilities are uncovered for participants. You might take away a new idea for a writing project\, or a deepening of something you’re already working on. Or you might feel interested to try phenomenological therapeutic writing. Or… something else entirely. Groups are unpredictable. People surprise themselves. \nWhat happens in the workgroups? Stella and Chris’ workgroups are all different but they have three unvarying principles: \n\nProcess before product. This isn’t ever about producing a fancy piece of written work – you can do that on your own time. This is about play\, in the freest and deepest sense. Through playful experiment you are invited to notice & channel the existential energies that inform your personal creative process. You won’t be asked to share any writing you produce in our workgroups\, unless you want to share as part of exploring your process.\nExperience before erudition. Scholarship – although such an important pillar of philosophically-reflective practice – isn’t the focus here. In this space we’re about experiencing the existential aspects of our creative practice\, through practical exercises and discussion.\nInclusion before everything. Our workgroups are founded on the observation that connection IS creativity. Every aspect of you that you and the group might include in the creative process is welcome and valued: your religion\, culture\, gender identification\, ethnicity\, and sexuality; your anger\, your humour\, your darkness and your love. We ask that you bring your whole self\, disclose what you feel safe disclosing\, and treat others in the group in a way that helps them be safe.\n\nDo I need to attend both workgroups? These two workgroups are designed as a pair\, so participation in both won’t feel repetitive. You are also welcome to participate only in the first workgroup\, but please don’t participate only in the second. The second workgroup will be specifically structured around the requests of the group as expressed in the first. \n\n \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Wayward Angel - Manu Bazzano - TBC
DESCRIPTION:WAYWARD ANGEL\nA talk/performance by Manu Bazzano\nTHIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN-PERSON \n \nWhat does it mean to redeem the (individual and collective) past? Do catastrophe and redemption go hand in hand? What does it mean to say yes to the future? In seeking happiness\, we often want repetition\, grasping the evanescent moment of the “not yet” and the unique… \nIn his 9th Thesis of History\, written after his release from the internment camp in France and just before his suicide\, Walter Benjamin wrote: A Klee painting … shows an angel looking … about to move away from something he is contemplating … This is … the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events\, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. … The angel would like to stay\, awaken the dead\, and mend what has been broken. But a storm is blowing … It caught in his wings with such a force that the angel can no longer close them. The storm … drives him into the future to which his back is turned\, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward \nInspired by Walter Benjamin’s 9th Thesis of History\, this talk/performance will address some of these questions through movement\, song\, and speech. Followed by conversation and discussion. \n \nDr Manu Bazzano is an author\, psychotherapist/supervisor\, and a student of Zen and Butoh. \nHis latest book is Re-Visioning Existential Therapy (Ed) (Routledge\, 2020) \nHis forthcoming book\, Subversion and Desire (Routledge)\, will come out in October 2022. \nwww.manubazzano.com \n \nA 2 hours Certificate of attendance will be sent to participants. \nPlease bring your email confirming your ticket purchase in order to access the theatre. \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Symposium 4th June 7pm-9pm
DESCRIPTION:Symposium: 4th June 7pm-9pm\n\nTopic: Daseinsanalysis: The Renaissance of Medard Boss’s Existential Psychotherapy\nSpeaker: Miles Groth\, PhD\n\n \n\n\n\nThe symposium will begin with a survey of the history of daseinsanalysis\, its basic theoretical principles\, and\nall elements of daseinsanalytic practice\, including the goal of daseinsanalysis by contrast with that of other existential and medical psychotherapies. The bulk of the time will be devoted to discussion and Q&A by members of symposium. \nLittle was heard about daseinsanalysis in English after the publication of Gion Condrau’s Heidegger’s Impact on Psychotherapy (1998) and Martin Heidegger’s Zollikon Seminars (2001)\, edited by Medard Boss\, until the\nappearance of Alice Holzhey-Kunz’s Daseinsanalysis five years ago. The volume by Holzhey-Kunz\, an analysand and colleague of Medard Boss\, was a signal of heightened interest in a field that has been quietly growing for the gaining momentum for the past twenty years. Since 1984\, the journal Daseinsanalyse has published a yearbook but since the articles in it are mostly in German\, its rich contributions are relatively unknown. During that same period a half-dozen small daseinsanalytic institutes have been active in Austria\, the Czech Republic\, Greece\, Hungary\, Switzerland and Brazil. An American Daseinsanalytic Institute will be constituted later this year\, an event that signals the increasing strength of the movement. In anticipation of that event and the publication by SEA of dialogues between Miles Groth and Tamás Fazekis\, The Renaissance of Daseinsanalysis: What Does Existential Really Mean? Later this year\, it seems appropriate to take a few minutes to look back to the origins of the modification of psychoanalysis by Medard Boss known as psychotherapeutic daseinsanalysis. \nReadings: Miles Groth\, (2020) and After Psychotherapy (2017)\,Medard Boss and the Promise of Psychotherapy: The Beginnings of Daseinsanalysis (2020)\, Gion Cndrau\, Heidegger’s Impact on Psychotherapy (2 nd rev. ed. forthcoming 2022). \n \nAbout Miles Groth: \nMiles Groth\, PhD\, is a long-time member of SEA and a contributor to its journal. Mentored by Jan van den berg and William J. Richardson\, SJ\, his interest in Daseinsanalysis increased after meeting Medard Boss in 1976 in Zurich. Like Boss\, originally trained as a psychoanalyst\, Professor Groth was strongly influenced by the analytics of existence of Martin Heidegger\, which spawned the psychiatric daseinsanalysis of Ludwig Binswanger\, Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy\, and Boss’s psychotherapeutic daseinsanalysis. He is the author of many articles on existential analysis and Continental philosophy\, and a number of books including The Voice that Thinks\, Translating Heidegger\, Preparatory Thinking in Heidegger’s Teaching\, and most recently\, Medard Boss and the Promise of Psychotherapy and After Psychotherapy. His dialogues with Todd DuBose\, The Soul of Psychotherapy\, appeared in the SEA monograph series\, which will also offer his dialogues with the daseinsanalyst Tamás Fazekis later this year. He has been in private practice since 1985. His revised second edition of Gion Condrau’s Heidegger’s Impact on Psychotherapy will be published by Free Associations Books in 2022\, as will a volume of interviews with R.D. Laing and Vicenzo Caretti from 1979\, translated from the Italian. He lives in New York. \n \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nOur Zoom Symposiums take place every month from 7 pm to 9 pm. A host will introduce the topic and present a question for the first 10 to 15 minutes to start the symposium but the discussion belongs to all attendees. \nPlease register your attendance. \n\nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next host please don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on \nevents@existentialanalysis.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:The Politics of Experience: existential anxiety. Hugh Knopf. 18th May 7pm-9pm.
DESCRIPTION:In ‘The Divided Self’ R.D. Laing describes an ‘ontologically secure’ individual as experiencing her/ his ‘being’ in ‘ordinary circumstances’ as: \n“..real\, alive\, whole; as differentiated from the rest of the world… ..that his identity and autonomy are never in question; as a continuum in time; as having inner consistency\, substantiality and worth…” (p.41\, The Divided Self) \nR.D. Laing describes individuals for whom ‘the ordinary circumstances of life’ “…do not afford a perpetual threat to one’s own existence..” (ibid: p.42) as ontolologically secure. Those who do not have this ‘basic threshold of ontological security’ are at risk of psychosis and what he describes as: ‘engulfment’\, ‘implosion’\, ‘petrification and depersonalisation’ (ibid: see pages 43-61). \nWhile some measure of ‘security’ or ‘identity’ is necessary day to day\, life being contingent and subject to ‘extraordinary circumstances’ none of us\, I suggest\, have the ‘ontologically secure’ life described above. It would almost certainly be terribly dull at the very least! \nFor the R.D. Laing of ‘The Divided Self’ our relatedness to others is an aspect of our being that can be used for therapeutic ends. Drawing further references from Laing\, from J.P. Sartre and from personal and clinical experience (and with playful exercises) the workshop aims to open conversation on relatedness alongside what Laing describes as crucial to the existential therapeutic project\, the tragic paradox of our separation from others. \n \n \nHugh Knopf. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk. \n

SUMMARY:Symposium 7th May 7pm-9pm
DESCRIPTION:Symposium: 7th May 7pm-9pm\n\nYou can blow out a candle\, But you can’t blow out a fire:\nAn exploration of inner freedom according to Steve Biko.\nPresenter: Julia Kukard\n\n \n \nStephen Bantu Biko was killed by the SA apartheid police is September 1977. As an African existentialist he explored the paradoxes of freedom and responsibility\, particularly inner freedom\, and how this could/would affect the liberation of black South Africans. More recently his work has influenced political movements around decolonisation\, Black Lives Matter and Rhodes Must Fall. \nJulia will be exploring Biko’s understanding of inner freedom and its application to existential psychotherapy and coaching. Links will be made to the work of Heidegger\, Sartre\, de Beauvoir\, Jaspers and Fanon as well as more contemporary existential Afrikana philosophers such as Derek Hook\, Achille Mbembe\, Mapogo P. Moore\, Lewis Gordon and others. Julia will take a practical approach and illustrate the value of Biko’s theories to psychotherapy and coaching by grounding the philosophy in a practical exercise. \n \nJulia Kukard \nJulia is an existential coach working with Aephoria Partners (www.aephoria.co.za) mainly in the corporate sphere in South Africa\, the US and globally. She has recently submitted her doctorate at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling (NSPC) in which she used the work of Biko to understand the mechanisms of leadership stuckness and release. She was grateful to have been supported in this by a scholarship from the Hans W. Cohn Fund. Julia brings with her almost 30 years of experience in training and development\, including leadership development\, teaching leadership on MBA programmes and coaching. She has a BA Hons MA MBA and hopefully a doctorate by the end of 2021. SUMMARY:Natalie Lancer - ‘Existential growth and The Eight Tensions Framework: navigating everyday challenges as students of life’ - 22nd of April at 07:00 pm to 9 pm.
DESCRIPTION:Dr Natalie Lancer\, PhD (Lond)\, MA (Oxon)\, PGCE\, MA (Lond)\, Dip Psych (Open)\nExistential growth and The Eight Tensions Framework: navigating everyday challenges as students of life.\n22nd April\, 7pm-9pm on Zoom.\n \nIn this talk\, Natalie shares her Eight Tensions Framework – the set of existential quandaries originally formulated regarding university students\, but applicable to a much wider range of clients in psychotherapeutic and coaching settings. This can be explained in terms of us all being ‘students of life’\, making deliberate decisions and reflecting on these\, which is her interpretation of the nub of existential philosophy. In her talk\, she will draw on a range of existential philosophers\, including Frankl\, May\, Buber\, Van Deurzen\, Ortega y Gasset\, Buber and Schneider. \nShe will demonstrate how to apply the easy-to-use format of these tensions\, which can be shared in diagrammatic form and\, if desired\, as a set of reflective exercises for the client to complete. She will also propose a reformulated definition of ‘growth’ from an existential perspective. Natalie will explain why this definition is useful to share with clients and how it can be utilised within the Eight Tensions Framework. \n \n \nNatalie is an existential coach and a member of the Association for Coaching. She is a Master’s and PhD supervisor at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling and the University of East London. She is the Secretary of the British Psychological Society’s Special Group in Coaching Psychology. She started her own coaching practice (www.natalielancer.com) in 2010\, specialising in career coaching for young adults\, drawing on her 11 years in various roles within schools\, such as Assistant Head and Director of Higher Education. She co-authored a book on Coaching Techniques – Lancer\, N.\, Clutterbuck\, D. and Megginson\, D. (2016). Techniques for Coaching and Mentoring (2nd edn). Oxford: Routledge. Natalie completed her doctorate in Psychology at Birkbeck College\, University of London. Her doctoral work culminated in formulating The Eight Tensions Framework which is a set of existential quandaries. She now coaches a wide range of students\, from A-level to PhD\, using the Eight Tensions Framework. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:Building Bridges Between Coaching and Psychotherapy - YANNICK JACOB - February 9th @ 6 pm to 8 pm.
DESCRIPTION:Building Bridges Between Coaching and Psychotherapy\nSpeaker: Yannick Jacob\nMany counsellors\, psychotherapists and analysts are critical towards the coaching profession\, and\n(while arguably less so) vice versa. And while there are important ethical concerns about life coaches\noverstepping lines\, their limited training as well as a number of other issues\, our clients have a lot to\ngain from practitioners engaging in collaborative dialogue about the potential meeting points\,\nparallels and differences in the way that we approach our work. Our aim for this session is to\nilluminate the range of what coaching may be based on various definitions from literature\, the\nspectrum of coaching approaches and an insight into the coaching industry\, and in doing so explore\nhow coaches and therapists may build bridges in the interest of our clients’ wellbeing. In the process\nwe’ll discuss the potential value of integrative approaches to helping-by-talking and briefly introduce\nthe concept of positive existentialism (an integration of Positive Psychology and Existentialism). \nYannick Jacob is an Existential Coach (MA)\, Positive Psychologist (MSc)\, Coach Trainer & Supervisor (DIP) and Mediator (SPCP Dispute Resolution). He’s the Program Director of the the Accredited Certificate in Integrative Coaching at the School of Positive Transformation\, for which he’s gathered many of the world’s most influential coaches\, and he’s the former Programme Leader of the MSc Coaching Psychology at the University of East London. \nYannick is part of the teaching faculties at The School of Life\, Animas Centre for Coaching and the International Centre for Coaching Supervision. Yannick’s love for coaching\, positive existential thought and personal development is contagious and he loves to challenge people to think\, learn & grow\, to explore the BIG questions and to appreciate the whole spectrum of what life has to offer. As a coach Yannick partners with his clients to help them lead and navigate their lives and careers\, to make big decisions and\, ultimately\, find ways to be happy. His long-term vision is to inspire the world to embrace their human condition in all its beautiful and challenging facets and to create a more meaningful human experience. \nYannick presents at conferences internationally and his book\, An Introduction to Existential Coaching\, was published by Routledge\, the world’s leading academic publisher. Learn more about Yannick and his work at www.existential.coach and www.RocketSupervision.com. \n \nThis event will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:Echoism and the echositic-narcissistic complex (ENC). Donna Christina Savery. Sep 15th 7:30pm-9:30pm.
DESCRIPTION:Echoism and the echositic-narcissistic complex (ENC)\nDonna Christina Savery\n\nSep 15th @ 7:30pm-9:30pm on Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\nDonna Christina Savery is an existential therapist and daseinsanalyst of the Zurich seminar having studied with Alice Holzhey Kunz. She works in private practice in the UK and teaches and supervises internationally. \nFollowing her initial seminar in April this year on Echoism\, in which she introduced the key ideas in her book\, Echoism: The silenced response to narcissism\, Donna returns to present a more detailed exploration into Echoism and in particular the echoistic-narcissistic complex (ENC). \nDrawing upon over ten years of research\, in which she has specialised in working with both Echoistic and Narciasistic clients\, she uses a combination of clinical examples\, existential and psychoanalytic ideas and the daseinsanalytic method to bring a deep understanding to the ways in which narcissists and echoists relate and are drawn to one another. Her research shows that each can play an active role\, however unconsciously\, in drawing out the corresponding character traits in others and indeed in the therapist. She underpins her observations with key theoretical ideas from Sartre on Being and The Look. \nDonna will discuss how she works with trainees and therapists in supervision\, to recognise their own echoistic and narcissistic tendencies and to be aware of how these may present in the work\, and how to work with them in a way that is of benefit to clients who are susceptible to these very challenging issues in themselves and in their relationship dynamics with others. \nThe session will be 2 hours and will include a 30 minute discussion. \nIt is not necessary to have read the book to attend\, but reading chapters 8 and 9 beforehand will certainly enhance the discussion.. Click here to see Donna’s book : ECHOISM \n \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hour CPD Certificate of Attendance will be sent to participants.

SUMMARY:A Sightless World - Readdressing Sight-Loss with Some Merleau-Ponty Ideas - PAULO RIBEIRO - 28th of July 2020 @ 6 pm to 8 pm.
DESCRIPTION:A Sightless World – Readdressing Sight-Loss with Some Merleau-Ponty Ideas\nPaulo Ribeiro \nPaulo is an existential psychotherapist currently working for Headstrong Counselling\, an extremely busy low-cost therapy service in London\, where he sees clients with complex presentations\, mostly personality disorders\, major depression and anxiety and gender identity. Before that\, Paulo worked for the RNIB – Royal National Institute for Blind People and for Hammersmith and Fulham Mind. \nPaulo holds a BA in Social Communication\, a Master’s in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and he is at present finishing an advanced diploma in Existential psychotherapy at Regent’s School of Psychology and Psychotherapy. \nBlindness and psychotherapy have been present in Paulo’s life for a few years. Paulo lost his sight six years ago\, and in the process of his rehabilitation\, and through his therapeutic work\, Paulo discovered that embodiment speaks in many ways in a therapeutic encounter. \nIn this talk\, Paulo will be sharing a bit of his life and the process of his rehabilitation as a sightless psychotherapist and how he found out\, through the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, that our body speaks in many ways where vision\, and visibility\, in their absence\, open a world of new possibilities to a being-in-the-world. He will emphasise the process of his rehabilitation and re-engagement with the world through some Maurice Merleau-Ponty ideas such as body intentionality and the concepts of concrete and abstract movements. \nPaulo believes that our current situation with the Corona virus\, where the embodied aspect of therapy has transitioned from body encounter to digital encounter\, mirror\, to some extent\, a phenomenon present between client and therapist when technology replaces physicality – i.e. phone sessions\, online sessions. \nAt the RNIB\, Paulo counselled individuals affected by sight-loss over the phone. He will be sharing his experience during this time. \n \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants.

Other interests lie at the intersection of therapy with philosophy\, arts\, psychoanalysis\, and critical social theory. \nThinking about race is hard. Talking\, harder. In trying to express a point of view\, one stumbles into saying something controversial. It is ironic when this occurs\, but sometimes the irony is lost and offence is caused. Devang\, therefore\, considered four alternatives for the title of his seminar. Each of these relates to prevailing forms of irony in society that are relevant to race: the irony of equality ethics\, the irony of diversity ethics\, the irony of political discourse\, and the irony of social identity. These are general forms of what he refers to as the category of ‘irony of public life’. By irony he means any state of affairs that verges on contradicting its meaningfulness. \nIn contrast to the ‘irony of public life’\, Devang draws upon contemporary Kierkegaardian scholarship to propose a different category: existential irony. He suggest existential irony as a kind of capability or an act rather than a state of affairs. It is a kind of practice that sits between meditation\, dreaming\, art\, ethics\, and encounter therapy. It aims to generate first-person accounts (in contrast to abstract social critiques) of moments of uncanniness in our life. In these moments\, the borders of our practical context are allowed to fall apart. As our assertions of knowledge begin to dissolve\, our individual and collective complicity is revealed in perpetuating ignorance and alienation in relation to ourselves and each other. \nExistential irony involves cultivating perceptual openness\, building emotional stamina\, and welcoming moments of our own de-centering. It can be one way to catch our selves red-handed\, without condemning or condoning\, in acts of what Sartre might call ‘bad faith’\, Heidegger ‘inauthenticity’\, Nietzsche ‘ressentiment’\, and Kierkegaard ‘spiritlessness’. Encountering this fallibility is not easy. The failure rate is high. But it may eventually lead to a kind of waking up that comes with giving up the pretense of ‘woke posturing’\, virtue-signalling\, and political correctness that we have occasionally witnessed after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. \nRather than stifle or evacuate our vital cathartic impulses\, existential irony can include these to show us possibilities of directly engaging with the struggle for recognition of disenfranchised communities\, and our collective emancipation from the clutches of hyper-capitalism and neoliberalism. \n \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 4-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants.

SUMMARY:A Phenomenological Reflection Upon the Benefits of Kum Nye Movement within an Embodied Approach to Existential Psychotherapy - JASON UPTON - 25th of June @ 10 am - 12 pm
DESCRIPTION:A Phenomenological Reflection Upon the Benefits of Kum Nye Movement within an Embodied Approach to Existential Psychotherapy\n \nJason Upton is a UKCP registered existential psychotherapist and dance movement therapist with many years’ experience in the fields of trauma\, sexual abuse and sexual offending. He currently lectures at Regent’s University and sees clients in private practice. Jason has practised Kum Nye and other Tibetan movement practices for over 17 years. He is also doing a PhD at SOAS which takes a phenomenological perspective on early Tibetan Buddhist practices which involve the body and sense perception. \n \nI will look at the therapeutic effects of a Tibetan movement practice called Kum Nye. Having experienced the tremendous benefits of Kum Nye during my own recovery from trauma\, I have begun to explore the integration of Kum Nye movement with my client work. During the seminar\, I will give an introduction to Kum Nye and shows videos of some of the movements. I will offer my reflection upon how clinical issues such as trauma and depression may affect one’s embodied way of being-in-the-world through an application of Merleau-Ponty’s concept of the body schema. Drawing upon personal experience and clinical material\, I propose that Kum Nye movement can help overcome sedimented habits in the body schema and allow for a return to an expressive sense of meaning-making in and through the body. I will discuss my experience of how such an embodied approach can be integrated into therapy sessions with clients. \nThe seminar will include an opportunity to experience a few Kum Nye movements\, so I would encourage participants to find an appropriate space where they can stand and move their arms freely. The movements will be simple and combined with slow and fast breathing. Most people should be able to perform them at a level comfortable for their ability. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants

SUMMARY:'Covid-19 and the financial impact on my therapy practice' - PAUL SILVER-MYER - 14th of June @ 11 am - 1 pm
DESCRIPTION:‘Covid-19 and the financial impact on my therapy practice’\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are two crises going on – a health crisis and a financial one – and whilst it’s an anxious and upsetting time with the primary concern being the health of the nation\, nevertheless many self-employed therapists have found their income has been [severely] affected. This session will look at your rights as a self-employed person\, what financial support is available to you and how your business accounts and relationship with HMRC might be affected. There will be ample time for Questions and Answers and additionally\, if you would prefer to speak privately to Paul about your personal financial affairs then he will be happy to make himself available at the end of the session. \n\n\nPaul Silver-Myer is both an accountant and a UKCP registered existential psychotherapist. Some years back he realised that half of his accountancy practice was about numbers\, but the other half was about the people behind those numbers yet 99% of his accountancy training was only about the former. So he signed up for a foundation course in counselling and the rest\, as they say\, is history. \nIn addition to a small therapy practice he also prepares tax returns for over 100 therapists and therapy organisations\, being in the fortunate position of clearly understanding the nature of being in business as a counsellor or therapist. \n\n \nThis event will be held on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants

SUMMARY:SYMPOSIUM May 22nd 7-9pm
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 Shall Not Stop Us.\nSEA Symposiums Are Picking Up Again \n \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nThis is a FREE event. \nMay 22nd @ 7 pm – 9 pm Free \nSpeaker: DEVANG VAIDYA \nTitle: DO THERAPISTS’ EXPERIENCES AS CLIENTS INFLUENCE THEIR PRACTICE? \nIn this symposium we will discuss how our own experiences in therapy as clients may have influenced our decision to become therapists. \nFurther\, our way of practising therapy can be a reflection of what worked – and did not work – in our own therapy. Our expectations of therapy\, whether they were met or not\, can shape our ethos and style of working with clients. Indeed our entire stance towards therapy can be determined in response to our own therapist’s value system. We don’t often reflect on how much our therapists may have taught us about practising therapy. We are likely to be taking up theoretical\, philosophical\, methodological\, and ethical elements that are resonant – favourably or unfavourably – with our own experiences as clients. \n \n \nDevang Vaidya is a person-centred existential psychotherapist based in London. \n \nThere are limited spaces\, so please register your presence here. \nYou will be sent a ZOOM code or link on the day\, in order to join the meeting. \nIf you are interested in being the next speaker on our Symposium night\, \nplease contact: events@existentialanalysis.org.uk\n
