SUMMARY:Existential Approaches to Interpersonal Trauma - Dr Marc Boaz - Oct 1 2022 @ 11 am - 1 pm BST
DESCRIPTION:Existential Approaches to Interpersonal Trauma \nPresented by Dr Marc Boaz \n  \nThe seminar will provide an introduction to different existential approaches to understanding\ninterpersonal trauma. Interpersonal trauma includes experiences of; childhood abuse and neglect\,\ndomestic and partner abuse\, rape and sexual violence\, and inhumane\, degrading and torturous\ntreatment. Marc will give and overview of perspectives from existential-phenomenological\,\nphenomenological-contextual\, existential-humanistic\, social phenomenological\, logotherapeutic\, and\nexistential analytic writers and practitioners. He will also outline his own approach of modal\nexistentialism\, and explore how this could be used to understand trauma-related phenomena. Finally\,\nMarc will discuss how these approaches can be applied in practice to support people to make sense of\nthe trauma they have experienced. \nAdversity and trauma-informed practices are increasingly becoming central to mental health service\nprovision\, and practice in psychology and psychotherapy. Existentialism has tended to subsume ideas\nabout trauma into broader ideas about human suffering and crisis\, and many existential practitioners\nhave had to rely on the ideas and approaches from other orientations and modalities to understand and\nwork with trauma. This seminar offers an initial introduction to the existential contributions to\nunderstanding trauma\, and offers some suggestions about how to work existentially with people who\nhave experienced interpersonal trauma. \nThis seminar is for counsellors\, psychotherapists\, psychologists and psychiatrists who have and\ninterest\, or have a background\, in working with people who experienced interpersonal trauma. It is\nalso suitable for professionals working in wider mental health or allied health professions.\nAttendees are encouraged to purchase a copy of the book in advance of the event\, and will have time\nto ask questions or provide their own reflections during the seminar. The book can be ordered through\nthe publishers website: https://www.routledge.com/An-Existential-Approach-to-Interpersonal-\nTrauma-Modes-of-Existing-and-Confrontations/Boaz/p/book/9781032020600 \, through an online\nbookstore\, or from your local book shop. \nDr Marc Boaz is an existential psychotherapist\, member of SEA\, and the author of the recent book\n(2022) ‘An Existential Approach to Interpersonal Trauma’. Marc is a visiting Professor in Public\nMental Health\, and a member of\, and policy advisor to\, the UK Trauma Council (UKTC) hosted by\nthe Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families. \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Existential Analysis Writing Award – Kierkegaardian Contributions to Existential Therapy - 31 August 2022
DESCRIPTION:Existential Analysis Writing Award – Kierkegaardian Contributions to Existential Therapy \n31 August 2022 \nPhenomenology\, as a discipline\, is concerned with returning to the ways that things are given in experience getting “back to the ‘things themselves.”1 \n“Existential phenomenology seeks to get at the meaning of lived experience through the careful and systematic analysis of lived experience itself.”2 \n“Existential phenomenology describes subjective human experience as it reflects people’s values\, purposes\, ideals\, intentions\, emotions\, and relationships. It concerns itself with the experiences and actions of the individual\, rather than conformity or behaviour.”3 \nExistential therapy is recognized as a phenomenological practice. Yet\, not every activity claiming to be phenomenological is necessarily therapeutic. For existential therapists to be phenomenological\, and for phenomenologists to be therapeutic\, they must remain grounded in their own as well as their clients’ affective self-understanding. \nThis is in contrast with the ‘neutral observer’ stance of the positivist researcher who first abstracts the lived experience out of the existential context of a person\, and then breaks down the abstracted experience into the so called objective categories.  This gives rise to a Kierkegaardian worry that psychology and philosophy can be scientific and scholarly but lacking in transformative potency. 4 \nFrom a Kierkegaardian perspective\, existential therapists are faced with a number of questions\, for example: \n\nHow does the existential therapist reconcile the phenomenological principle of getting ‘back to the things themselves’ with the therapeutic task in Kierkegaardian terms of helping a person to stand alone as a work of love?\nHow can Kierkegaard’s ‘single individual’ attain ethical sensibility and maintain ethical obligations to others from the perspective of existential therapy?\nUnder what conditions can any ‘careful and systematic analysis’ in existential phenomenology be regarded as having genuine therapeutic worth?\n\nThis writing initiative responds to the prevailing positivist bias in psychotherapy that excludes phenomenological narratives which do not conform to the methods and categories of evidence-based research and psychopathology. \nThe submissions will ground and clarify under-represented phenomenological dimensions of experience in Kierkegaardian terms that are relevant to existential therapy. Examples of these are accounts that have ecological\, political\, somatic\, psychological\, feminist\, and religious dimensions. \nSubmission and Award \nThe closing date for submissions will be August 31st 2022. Enquiries and submissions should be sent by email attachment to the Editors\, Existential Analysis\, c/o Richard Swann to submissions.ea@gmail.com \nIn addition to these guidelines\, please also refer to the ‘Information for Contributors’ webpage on https://existentialanalysis.org.uk/publications/information-for-contributors/ \nUp to ten selected entries will each receive an award of £200. The selected entries will be announced at the SEA Annual Conference in November and the articles published in a special issue of Existential Analysis in the Spring of 2023. \nSubmissions will be evaluated for granting awards on the basis of the following core criteria: a) proper appropriation of Kierkegaardian concepts b) relevance to existential therapy c) critique of the positivistic bias d) argumentative rigour e) standard of writing. \nEntries will be adjudicated by a panel drawn from the Editorial Board and the Peer Review Panel of Existential Analysis. Final decisions will be made by the EA Editors and the Guest Editor. \nDevang Vaidya will be the Guest Editor of this special issue. \nProf Simon du Plock\nDr Martin Adams\nCo-editors Existential Analysis

SUMMARY:An Anthology of Short Stories and Poetry from the Society of Existential Analysis - 31 July 2022
DESCRIPTION:An Anthology of Short Stories and Poetry from the Society of Existential Analysis \n31 July 2022 \nThe SEA is launching an exciting new publication in November 2022 which aims to help\nintroduce ideas and themes around existentialism to a wide audience\, and we are\nlooking for contributors from all walks of life and from around the world. \nThe Anthology of Short Stories and Poetry from the Society for Existential Analysis is an\nopportunity for anyone who has a story to tell which explores the human condition –\nwhether through prose\, poetry or graphic art – in a fun and creative way. Fiction has\nalways been an essential way for people to think about ideas of existence and meaning\,\nand we want to encourage contributions from people beyond just the worlds of academia\nand psychotherapy. \nPerhaps you or someone you know has a story waiting to be told… and here is that\nopportunity! \nStories can be up to a maximum 15\,000 words\, not previously published and\ncontributors will also be asked to submit a short description of why they think their\ncontribution would work as existential-themed fiction. \n  \nThe deadline for submissions is 31 July 2022. \nFor further information or to submit your work\, please contact the editor\, Dean Andrews\,\nat deanandrewstherapy@gmail.com. \n

SUMMARY:Old Ways\, Recent Developments: Topics in Daseinanalysis - Miles Groth - July 27 - 7 pm - 9 pm BST
DESCRIPTION:Old Ways\, Recent Developments: Topics in Daseinanalysis \nPresented by Miles Groth \n  \n \nWho is Miles Groth? \nMiles Groth\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology (emeritus)\, at Wagner College in New York is the founder of the American Daseinsanalytic Institute. \nRecently\, he has participated in three online conferences in collaboration with Alfred Denker on Heidegger and Daseinsanalysis. \nHe is the author or editor of eighteen books\, fifty-six articles or chapters in books on psychotherapy and Continental philosophy\, and numerous book reviews. \nDr. Groth has presented papers at forty-one conferences in North America\, Europe and Australia. He convened four international conferences at Wagner College on existential analysis and related topics and has been a member of the executive boards of five international professional organizations\, serving on the editorial boards of five peer-reviewed journals. \nHe has been General Editor of three peer-reviewed journals (two of which he founded). \nDr. Groth has been in practice as daseinanalyst since 1985. \n  \nOld Ways\, Recent Developments: Topics in Daseinanalysis \nMiles Groth will present “Old Ways\, Recent Developments: Two Topics in Daseinanalysis”. The presentation coincides with the publication of his paper in the July issue of Existential Analysis: “Therapeutic Eros in Daseinanalysis: amo\, vol ut sis.” \nThe presentation will be in two parts: (1) Medard Boss and Alberto Seguín on the therapeutic eros\, the Dasein-Dasein relation\, and therapeutic liberation\, and (2) the use of the couch in daseinanalysis. \nTherapists often discuss the ontic relationship between therapist and client but little attention is paid to what makes this relationship possible\, namely\, the ontological relation between the existence (Dasein) of each that subtends the ontic relationship. \nDr. Groth will discuss how to understand the structure of the crossing of the “ontic-ontological divide” in therapeutic eros. \nSecond\, one of the hallmarks of daseinanalysis is a legacy of its origins in psychoanalysis: the use of the couch. Although not often mentioned\, this has always been and continues to be part of the practice of daseinanalysis. \nDr. Groth will comment on the reasons for the need for this element of practice especially in the context of recent questions about the efficacy of virtual encounters between therapist and other necessitated by the COVID pandemic.

SUMMARY:Experiential-Existential Creative Writing Workgroups - Chris Cleave & Stella Duffy - June 19 & July 3 - 10 am - 2 pm BST
DESCRIPTION:Experiential-Existential Creative Writing Workgroups\nPresented by Chris Cleave & Stella Duffy \n  \nWho are the workgroup facilitators? \nStella Duffy and Chris Cleave are third-year doctoral students at NSPC\, with a combined 60 years of writing practice and an understanding of process as the core of that work. \n  \n \nChris Cleave’s novels celebrate people’s resilience\, humour\, and capacity for healing. He is the author of four award-winners including the New York Times #1 bestseller\, Little Bee. He teaches writing at the Arvon Foundation and mentors privately. His forthcoming novel\, Minotaur\, explores ambiguity and reconciliation in mother-daughter relationships. His doctoral research is in the experiences that people seek in order to heal themselves outside of formal therapy. \n \n  \nStella Duffy is an award-winning writer of 17 novels\, over 70 short stories and 14 plays. She has taught writing for the Arvon Foundation\, Goldsmiths University and Sotheby’s Institute among many others. She worked in devised and physical theatre for many decades and is a yoga teacher\, running monthly yoga for writing workshops. Her doctoral research is in the embodied experience of postmenopause. \n  \n  \nWhy are we offering these twin workgroups? Because you asked for something more! Following Stella and Chris’s enjoyable and well-attended writing workgroup at the last SEA Conference\, we learned that there is an appetite for a stronger dose of this inspiring and welcoming process that invites therapists of all approaches to connect with themselves and with existential themes through phenomenological and creative writing. So here it is: two lively and dynamic 4-hour groups\, separated by a fortnight for personal reflection. \nWho’s it for? It’s for therapists\, researchers\, their friends and anyone else who might be interested – feel free to share this invitation. You don’t need to ‘be existential’ or to have any writing experience. As experienced novelists and writing tutors\, and trainee existential therapists\, we suggest creative approaches and attunements that work with the individuals and the group on the day\, while you bring your life understanding and your (perhaps much more extensive) experience of connecting with clients. \nWhat will I get out of it? New creative connections with yourself and others. The result of holding this atypical space for this unusual crowd is a unique group energy\, in which we’ve discovered that new meanings and possibilities are uncovered for participants. You might take away a new idea for a writing project\, or a deepening of something you’re already working on. Or you might feel interested to try phenomenological therapeutic writing. Or… something else entirely. Groups are unpredictable. People surprise themselves. \nWhat happens in the workgroups? Stella and Chris’ workgroups are all different but they have three unvarying principles: \n\nProcess before product. This isn’t ever about producing a fancy piece of written work – you can do that on your own time. This is about play\, in the freest and deepest sense. Through playful experiment you are invited to notice & channel the existential energies that inform your personal creative process. You won’t be asked to share any writing you produce in our workgroups\, unless you want to share as part of exploring your process.\nExperience before erudition. Scholarship – although such an important pillar of philosophically-reflective practice – isn’t the focus here. In this space we’re about experiencing the existential aspects of our creative practice\, through practical exercises and discussion.\nInclusion before everything. Our workgroups are founded on the observation that connection IS creativity. Every aspect of you that you and the group might include in the creative process is welcome and valued: your religion\, culture\, gender identification\, ethnicity\, and sexuality; your anger\, your humour\, your darkness and your love. We ask that you bring your whole self\, disclose what you feel safe disclosing\, and treat others in the group in a way that helps them be safe.\n\nDo I need to attend both workgroups? These two workgroups are designed as a pair\, so participation in both won’t feel repetitive. You are also welcome to participate only in the first workgroup\, but please don’t participate only in the second. The second workgroup will be specifically structured around the requests of the group as expressed in the first. \n\n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Wayward Angel - Manu Bazzano - TBC
DESCRIPTION:WAYWARD ANGEL\nA talk/performance by Manu Bazzano\nTHIS  EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN-PERSON \n \nWhat does it mean to redeem the (individual and collective) past? Do catastrophe and redemption go hand in hand? What does it mean to say yes to the future? In seeking happiness\, we often want repetition\, grasping the evanescent moment of the “not yet” and the unique… \nIn his 9th Thesis of History\, written after his release from the internment camp in France and just before his suicide\, Walter Benjamin wrote: A Klee painting … shows an angel looking … about to move away from something he is contemplating … This is … the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events\, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. … The angel would like to stay\, awaken the dead\, and mend what has been broken. But a storm is blowing … It caught in his wings with such a force that the angel can no longer close them. The storm … drives him into the future to which his back is turned\, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward \nInspired by Walter Benjamin’s 9th Thesis of History\, this talk/performance will address some of these questions through movement\, song\, and speech. Followed by conversation and discussion. \n \nDr Manu Bazzano is an author\, psychotherapist/supervisor\, and a student of Zen and Butoh. \nHis latest book is Re-Visioning Existential Therapy (Ed) (Routledge\, 2020) \nHis forthcoming book\, Subversion and Desire (Routledge)\, will come out in October 2022. \nwww.manubazzano.com \n  \nA 2 hours Certificate of attendance will be sent to participants. \nPlease bring your email confirming your ticket purchase in order to access the theatre. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reading Kierkegaard Beyond Scholarliness and Scienticism - Devang Vaidya - April 8th @ 4 pm- 6 pm UK Time ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Reading Kierkegaard Beyond Scholarliness and Scienticism\nApril 8th 4pm-6pm UK Time on Zoom \nSeminar II – Kierkegaard and Indirect Communication  \nPresented by Devang Vaidya\n \n  \nMaking Kierkegaard relevant to existential therapy entails a firm understanding of the concept of indirect communication and its place in his authorship. In this seminar\, I will address three fundamental errors commonly made in approaching Kierkegaard’s writings when indirect communication is not given due consideration. \nThe first of these errors is simply ignoring Kierkegaard’s specific remarks on the subject. It is astonishing how common this error is amongst therapists of different schools who refer to Kierkegaard as an influence. The other errors result from misinterpreting the concept of indirect communication in one of two ways: a) Taking indirection to mean a rhetorical ploy to be used with someone who ‘can’t handle the truth’ directly; or b) as mannerisms of speech and styles of articulating knowledge. Although many therapists find such linguistic devices to be useful\, these do not adequately reflect the communicative aim at the heart of Kierkegaard’s works. \nThe key point here is that the concept of indirect communication is critical for bridging Kierkegaard’s philosophical thought with the practice of a distinctive form of existential therapy. I propose that a proper grasp of this concept is the basis of an essential ethos for all therapists who wish to stand apart from the medical model. It avoids all the trappings of abstract constructs and dense scholarliness\, and preserves the vital spontaneity in the encounter between therapist and client. \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Reading Kierkegaard Beyond Scholarliness and Scienticism - Devang Vaidya - February 25th @ 4 pm - 6 pm GMT - ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Reading Kierkegaard Beyond Scholarliness and Scienticism\nPresented by Devang Vaidya\n \nThe Present Age of Sickness unto Death  \n‘The present age is the age of despair’\, wrote Kierkegaard in 1836 at the age of twenty-two. The theme of despair at collective and individual levels never strayed far from his thought\, as is evident from his illustrious writing career. Kierkegaard saw despair as a ‘sickness unto death’ – a universal affliction of self-estrangement that is rooted in one’s own historical era. For Kierkegaard\, despair is also a precondition for an individual’s higher ethical and spiritual development.  Today’s seminar focuses on one of Kierkegaard’s less renowned texts\, The Present Age. Although a critique of modernity in his time\, this text succeeds also in illuminating the socio-cultural processes of levelling and abstraction in our present age. These processes refer to the crises of values whereby the qualitative distinctions in various spheres of life are flattened out or erased. Today’s discussion will acknowledge how one form of this crises has crept into many therapy rooms under the sage warrant of evidence-based practice. Underpinned by the ‘common factors’ principle\, ironically termed as the ‘dodo bird verdict’\, therapy is increasingly perceived as a generic product sold under different brands. In contrast\, Kierkegaard’s thought can help to reset the distinctive aim of existential therapy. This involves shifting the emphasis away from the objectivity of diagnoses and treatments\, measurable goals and outcomes\, towards growing the subjective capacity for relating to one’s existence as a task of freedom\, and for grounding oneself in the ineluctable vulnerability of our shared human condition.

SUMMARY:DIALOGUES on MADNESS and WISDOM. 8th February\, 7-9pm UK time on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:DIALOGUES on MADNESS and WISDOM.  \nIn Conversation with R.D. Laing.\nR.D. Laing & Vincenzo Caretti.  Edited by Miles Groth and Danilo Serra. \n      NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON \n  \nYou are invited to meet the authors of the forthcoming \nSEA Dialogue no. 4.\n  \n  \nAfter more than forty years\, Vincenzo Caretti’s account of conversations with the Scottish psychiatrist\, R.D. Laing\, has finally been translated from Italian into English. Earlier translations in French\, German and Dutch have been out of print for quite a while. For that reason\, this English translation is of special importance. It was edited by Miles Groth\, the daseinsanalyst and existential analyst living in New York. \nFor many years now a psychoanalyst\, the probing questions of Caretti\, who was then a young therapist in training only in his early 20s but welcomed by Laing for a week of discussions\, is as fresh and insightful now as it was when first published in 1979. The translation by Danilo Serra\, a brilliant young Italian scholar in philosophy and the humanities\, is superb and brings to life the wit and subtlety of the famous radical psychotherapist and author of now classic works of social phenomenology on the family and schizophrenia. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the birth of Laing. \nThe topics of the conversations range from the Bible to Zen\, Freud and Jung\, the fate of the family and schizophrenia\, language\, silence and time\, and the place of young people and women in the rapidly changing world ushered in  by the Sixties. Their final conversation is characterized by Caretti as “a profession of faith” on the part of Laing. We have in these dialogues an illuminating portrait of the many sides of R.D. Laing the man\, the thinker\, and the therapist. \n Vincenzo Caretti (1953)\, is psychoanalyst and professor of Dynamic Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Department of Human Science of the LUMSA University of Rome. His research fields cover the traumatic experiences in developmental age\, the onset of the antisocial/psychopathic personality disorder\, the factors of change in psychotherapy of self regulation. \n Miles Groth\, PhD\, is full Professor (Emeritus) in the Department of Psychology at Wagner College\, New York. He is co-founder with Tamás Fazekas and President of the American Daseinsanalytic Institute (2021). Dr. Groth has been in private practice as a daseinsanalyst since 1985. He is the author of seven books and many articles on psychotherapy and Continental philosophy. He has lectured residents in psychiatry on integrating psychodynamic psychotherapy with traditional in-patient treatment. \n Danilo Serra ( 1991)\, PhD\, is the author of several books on topical philosophical issues and numerous articles in philosophy journals. Dr. Serra carries out research in the areas of Heideggerian Philosophy\, Poetic Phenomenology and Landscape Aesthetics. He is a member of the American Daseinsanalytic Institute (ADI). \n

SUMMARY:The Language Continuum. Haran Rasalingam. January 18th 7-9pm. ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:The Language Continuum: language\, dialects\, status and stigma.\nLanguage changes through time\, space and context. It is an indicator of belonging and exclusion\, advantage or disadvantage. More than simply a means of information transfer\, language is a complex signifier of identity. We care about our language\, we have opinions about correct and incorrect language\, polite or offensive language\, “appropriate” language. This presentation will look at the wonder of language variety\, celebrate its diversity and explode a few myths along the way. \n \nHaran Rasalingam ( he | him | his)  is an existential psychotherapist and coach. His academic and professional career has spanned Psychology and Technology\, but also Language and Linguistics – a lifelong passion of his which has led to an insatiable appetite to delve deep into languages far and wide as well as the science and philosophy of language including sociolinguistics\, psycholinguistics\, NLP\, the language of influence and\, as Wittgenstein would say\, language bewitchment. \nThis is an online event\, on Zoom. A link will be sent to attendees one day before the date. \nA 2 hours Certificate of Attendance will be provided. The event will be partially recorded. \n

SUMMARY:The Tortured Tribe Within. Dr. Natalie Fraser. 6th December 7-9pm Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The Tortured Tribe Within: \nExistential Explorations of The Aftermath of Trauma.\n  \nWhat is the biggest pain you’ve been through\, and why does it still hurt today? \nIn this talk Natalie shares the discoveries from her latest research\, providing new insights into how and why the aftermath of trauma can be more painful than the traumatic event itself. \nAs a human it is inevitable that we will encounter traumatic events either first-hand or vicariously. As a psychological practitioner\, frequently so. What we are exposed to in the aftermath paves the way to a journey of healing or torture. In a world of uncertainty and Others\, having an awareness of what does and doesn’t feel right within us is fundamental. But how do we gain awareness of these invisible messages within? \nCommon discourse speaks about the ‘inner critic’ and ‘overthinker’ but who else contributes to our daily inner-dialogical worlds? \nAre you ready to meet your private inner tribe\, and invite a deeper connection with yourself? \n  \n \nDr Natalie Fraser is a pluralistic Existential Psychologist and researcher specialising in trauma\, identity\, and private inner worlds. \nNatalie is the founder of Existential Offerings (www.existentialofferings.com)\, an ever-evolving project aspiring to make philosophical ideas about human life\, hope\, and suffering more accessible to people worldwide from all backgrounds. In 2021 she launched The Global Existential Summit (www.existentialsummit.com) bringing 25 world leading existential thinkers together for the first time in a FREE fully-online summit. \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:2021 SEA Annual Conference - "You couldn’t possibly understand!"
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Conference topic has been brewing for me for some time.  I have been moved by my own experiences of clients feeling it is simply not possible for “you to understand what I’ve been through!”  And I have also felt encouraged and challenged by the feedback from our very first Census\, that now is the time. \nThe response from people wishing to present has been overwhelming.  We have incredibly creative and thought-provoking presentations and workshops covering a diverse range of topics from: \nAlix Velasco ~ Chris Goto-Jones ~ Cristalle Hayes ~ Devang Vaidya ~ Dida Mitchell & Jyoti Nanda ~ Elv Moody ~ Haran Rasalingam & Maria Galani ~ Juli Jolly ~ Leanne Prosvic ~ Manu Bazzano ~ Marc Boaz ~ Marium Akhund ~ Niki D ~ Paola Pomponi & Serena Fianco ~ Rafał Miętkiewicz ~ Stella Duffy & Chris Cleave \nSpeaking to the things that make us all different.  The struggles both therapist and client encounter when the distance between us and our experience feels immense.  The assumptions we make of each other based on the lives we are living.  And the incredible capacity for change\, enlightenment\, and compassion that our differences can bring about. \nWhile there is a universality to our shared humanity\, the human experience is vast and the lenses through which we each experience ourselves myriad. \nNietzsche wrote\, “… Everybody wants the same\, everybody is the same: whoever feels different goes voluntarily into a madhouse.”  True?  But perhaps there is an important counterpoint to note\, that “Freedom means nothing\, unless it means the freedom to be different” (Rubin) \nWe do hope you’ll join us in challenging the status quo.\nShould you have any questions\, please do reach out to me with any questions: theSEAconference@gmail.com and I look forward seeing you on the day. \nTeresa.

SUMMARY:The Renaissance of Daseinsanalysis. Miles Groth\, Tamás Fazekas\, Kyle Glover. Tuesday October 19th 7pm-9pm
DESCRIPTION:Tamás Fazekas\, MD\, PhD (Vienna)\, and Miles Groth\, PhD (New York)\, have completed the third in the SEA Dialogues series on existential analysis. They will preview the book in this online meeting. “The Renaissance of Daseinsanalysis. What Does ‘Existential’ Really Mean?”\, edited by Kyle Glover\, is a series of 25 exchanges of letters during 2020\, the first COVID year. As such they are a testament to the optimism of the contributors and record a reaction to those so uncertain times that remained positive. The current third phase of interest in Martin Heidegger’s contribution to psychotherapy that these dialogues reflect eventuated in the formation of the American Daseinsanalytic Institute in August 2021. \nThe online presentation will begin with brief statements by each of the authors on his own way to the work of Medard Boss and the constitution of the first daseinsanalytic institute in Zurich in 1980. The bulk of the session\, however\, will be devoted to Q&A on themes including the history of Daseinsanalysis\, its current and future practical challenges\, and its differences from psychoanalysis and the many forms of existential practice. Dr Fazekas is a pediatrician and daseinsanalyst who founded the Hungarian Daseinsanalytic Institute. With beginnings in orthodox psychoanalysis\, Dr Groth has been in practice as a daseinsanalyst since the mid-1980s. \nThe presenters are especially interested in conveying their perception of what this current renaissance of interest in Daseinsanalysis means to young therapists who have become disenchanted with the medical model that pervades much of professional practice in psychiatry\, clinical psychology\, counseling and even existential analysis. Expect a serious but lighthearted evening of exchange of ideas\, focusing on practice rather than on theory. \n  \n   Tamás Fazekas MD\, PhD\, has studied medicine\, philosophy and anthropology in Vienna\, where he also finished his training in daseinsanalysis. Currently he is working in private practice as a pediatrician and psychotherapist\, teaching both at various universities. He has published several books on psychotherapy\, founded the Hungarian Daseinsanalytic Society\, and co-founded the American Daseinsanalytic Institute. \n  \n   Kyle Glover (editor) is currently a doctoral student in clinical psychology in San Diego\, California. He is secretary and treasurer of the newly formed American Daseinsanalytic Institute (ADI). He worked for many years in New York City within the mental illness care system in varying roles. Kyle is currently employed in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. With a formal education in the humanities\, he is interested in the application of phenomenology to therapy. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Symposium 4th June 7pm-9pm
DESCRIPTION:Symposium: 4th June 7pm-9pm\n\nTopic: Daseinsanalysis: The Renaissance of Medard Boss’s Existential Psychotherapy\nSpeaker: Miles Groth\, PhD\n\n \n\n\n\nThe symposium will begin with a survey of the history of daseinsanalysis\, its basic theoretical principles\, and\nall elements of daseinsanalytic practice\, including the goal of daseinsanalysis by contrast with that of other existential and medical psychotherapies. The bulk of the time will be devoted to discussion and Q&A by members of symposium. \nLittle was heard about daseinsanalysis in English after the publication of Gion Condrau’s Heidegger’s Impact on Psychotherapy (1998) and Martin Heidegger’s Zollikon Seminars (2001)\, edited by Medard Boss\, until the\nappearance of Alice Holzhey-Kunz’s Daseinsanalysis five years ago. The volume by Holzhey-Kunz\, an analysand and colleague of Medard Boss\, was a signal of heightened interest in a field that has been quietly growing for the gaining momentum for the past twenty years. Since 1984\, the journal Daseinsanalyse has published a yearbook but since the articles in it are mostly in German\, its rich contributions are relatively unknown. During that same period a half-dozen small daseinsanalytic institutes have been active in Austria\, the Czech Republic\, Greece\, Hungary\, Switzerland and Brazil. An American Daseinsanalytic Institute will be constituted later this year\, an event that signals the increasing strength of the movement. In anticipation of that event and the publication by SEA of dialogues between Miles Groth and Tamás Fazekis\, The Renaissance of Daseinsanalysis: What Does Existential Really Mean? Later this year\, it seems appropriate to take a few minutes to look back to the origins of the modification of psychoanalysis by Medard Boss known as psychotherapeutic daseinsanalysis. \nReadings: Miles Groth\, (2020) and After Psychotherapy (2017)\,Medard Boss and the Promise of Psychotherapy: The Beginnings of Daseinsanalysis (2020)\, Gion Cndrau\, Heidegger’s Impact on Psychotherapy (2 nd rev. ed. forthcoming 2022). \n  \nAbout Miles Groth: \nMiles Groth\, PhD\, is a long-time member of SEA and a contributor to its journal. Mentored by Jan van den berg and William J. Richardson\, SJ\, his interest in Daseinsanalysis increased after meeting Medard Boss in 1976 in Zurich. Like Boss\, originally trained as a psychoanalyst\, Professor Groth was strongly influenced by the analytics of existence of Martin Heidegger\, which spawned the psychiatric daseinsanalysis of Ludwig Binswanger\, Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy\, and Boss’s  psychotherapeutic daseinsanalysis. He is the author of many articles on existential analysis and Continental philosophy\, and a number of books including The Voice that Thinks\, Translating Heidegger\, Preparatory Thinking in Heidegger’s Teaching\, and most recently\, Medard Boss and the Promise of Psychotherapy and After Psychotherapy. His dialogues with Todd DuBose\, The Soul of Psychotherapy\, appeared in the SEA monograph series\, which will also offer his dialogues with the daseinsanalyst Tamás Fazekis later this year. He has been in private practice since 1985. His revised second edition of Gion Condrau’s Heidegger’s Impact on Psychotherapy will be published by Free Associations Books in 2022\, as will a volume of interviews with R.D. Laing and Vicenzo Caretti from 1979\, translated from the Italian. He lives in New York. \n  \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nOur Zoom Symposiums take place every month from 7 pm to 9 pm. SUMMARY:The Politics of Experience: existential anxiety. Hugh Knopf. 18th May 7pm-9pm.
DESCRIPTION:In ‘The Divided Self’ R.D. Laing describes an ‘ontologically secure’ individual as experiencing her/ his ‘being’ in ‘ordinary circumstances’ as: \n“..real\, alive\, whole; as differentiated from the rest of the world… ..that his identity and autonomy are never in question; as a continuum in time; as having inner consistency\, substantiality and worth…” (p.41\, The Divided Self) \nR.D. Laing describes individuals for whom ‘the ordinary circumstances of life’ “…do not afford a perpetual threat to one’s own existence..” (ibid: p.42) as ontolologically secure. Those who do not have this ‘basic threshold of ontological security’ are at risk of psychosis and what he describes as: ‘engulfment’\, ‘implosion’\, ‘petrification and depersonalisation’ (ibid: see pages 43-61). \nWhile some measure of ‘security’ or ‘identity’ is necessary day to day\, life being contingent and subject to ‘extraordinary circumstances’ none of us\, I suggest\, have the ‘ontologically secure’ life described above. It would almost certainly be terribly dull at the very least! \nFor the R.D. Laing of ‘The Divided Self’ our relatedness to others is an aspect of our being that can be used for therapeutic ends. Drawing further references from Laing\, from J.P. Sartre and from personal and clinical experience (and with playful exercises) the workshop aims to open conversation on relatedness alongside what Laing describes as crucial to the existential therapeutic project\, the tragic paradox of our separation from others. \n  \n \nHugh Knopf. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:Symposium 7th May 7pm-9pm
DESCRIPTION:Symposium: 7th May 7pm-9pm\n\nYou can blow out a candle\, But you can’t blow out a fire:\nAn exploration of inner freedom according to Steve Biko.\nPresenter: Julia Kukard\n\n \n  \nStephen Bantu Biko was killed by the SA apartheid police is September 1977. As an African existentialist he explored the paradoxes of freedom and responsibility\, particularly inner freedom\, and how this could/would affect the liberation of black South Africans. More recently his work has influenced political movements around decolonisation\, Black Lives Matter and Rhodes Must Fall. \nJulia will be exploring Biko’s understanding of inner freedom and its application to existential psychotherapy and coaching. Links will be made to the work of Heidegger\, Sartre\, de Beauvoir\, Jaspers and Fanon as well as more contemporary existential Afrikana philosophers such as Derek Hook\, Achille Mbembe\, Mapogo P. Moore\, Lewis Gordon and others.  Julia will take a practical approach and illustrate the value of Biko’s theories to psychotherapy and coaching by grounding the philosophy in a practical exercise. \n \nJulia Kukard \nJulia is an existential coach working with Aephoria Partners (www.aephoria.co.za) mainly in the corporate sphere in South Africa\, the US and globally. She has recently submitted her doctorate at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling (NSPC) in which she used the work of Biko to understand the mechanisms of leadership stuckness and release. She was grateful to have been supported in this by a scholarship from the Hans W. Cohn Fund. Julia brings with her almost 30 years of experience in training and development\, including leadership development\, teaching leadership on MBA programmes and coaching. She has a BA Hons MA MBA and hopefully a doctorate by the end of 2021. \n  \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. SUMMARY:Natalie Lancer - ‘Existential growth and The Eight Tensions Framework: navigating everyday challenges as students of life’ - 22nd of April at 07:00 pm to 9 pm.
DESCRIPTION:Dr Natalie Lancer\, PhD (Lond)\, MA (Oxon)\, PGCE\, MA (Lond)\, Dip Psych (Open)\nExistential growth and The Eight Tensions Framework: navigating everyday challenges as students of life.\n22nd April\, 7pm-9pm on Zoom.\n  \nIn this talk\, Natalie shares her Eight Tensions Framework – the set of existential quandaries originally formulated regarding university students\, but applicable to a much wider range of clients in psychotherapeutic and coaching settings. This can be explained in terms of us all being ‘students of life’\, making deliberate decisions and reflecting on these\, which is her interpretation of the nub of existential philosophy. In her talk\, she will draw on a range of existential philosophers\, including Frankl\, May\, Buber\, Van Deurzen\, Ortega y Gasset\, Buber and Schneider. \nShe will demonstrate how to apply the easy-to-use format of these tensions\, which can be shared in diagrammatic form and\, if desired\, as a set of reflective exercises for the client to complete. She will also propose a reformulated definition of ‘growth’ from an existential perspective. Natalie will explain why this definition is useful to share with clients and how it can be utilised within the Eight Tensions Framework. \n  \n \nNatalie is an existential coach and a member of the Association for Coaching. She is a Master’s and PhD supervisor at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling and the University of East London. She is the Secretary of the British Psychological Society’s Special Group in Coaching Psychology. She started her own coaching practice (www.natalielancer.com) in 2010\, specialising in career coaching for young adults\, drawing on her 11 years in various roles within schools\, such as Assistant Head and Director of Higher Education. She co-authored a book on Coaching Techniques – Lancer\, N.\, Clutterbuck\, D. and Megginson\, D. (2016). Techniques for Coaching and Mentoring (2nd edn). Oxford: Routledge. Natalie completed her doctorate in Psychology at Birkbeck College\, University of London. Her doctoral work culminated in formulating The Eight Tensions Framework which is a set of existential quandaries. She now coaches a wide range of students\, from A-level to PhD\, using the Eight Tensions Framework. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:Symposium 09 April 7pm-9pm Devang Vaidya
DESCRIPTION:Symposium: 9th April 7pm-9pm Devang Vaidya \nTopic: Beyond Doubt and Uncertainty.\n \n  \nDoubt has been at the centre of the Western philosophical canon. From ancient Greeks to Enlightenment philosophers to the modern and postmodern theorists\, overarching emphasis is placed on logos – on conceptual knowledge. This pursuit leaves Western philosophy stranded in the ‘uncertainty of the unknown’. In contrast\, existence-oriented traditions in the West\, East\, and Middle-East\, are all concerned less with knowledge. They set their sights beyond the known and the unknown – and accept existence ultimately as unknowable. Not logos but pathos and ethos\, not objective knowledge but subjective truth\, are the essential existential concerns. What can therapists learn from engagement with subjectivity not in the domain of logos but of pathos and ethos? Not conceptual knowledge built on abstract data\, but the living truth that erupts in moments of epiphanies and insights\, in dreams\, the uncanny\, even traumatic disruptions? We begin the evening with a quote from one perplexing figure from mid-19th c. Denmark\, Søren Kierkegaard… \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nOur Zoom Symposiums take place every month from 7 pm to 9 pm. SUMMARY:My Being in Time - How My Past Lives Reveal Who I Still Am - DIANA MITCHELL -17th of March 2021 @ 11 am to 1 pm.
DESCRIPTION:  \nMy Being in Time\nHow my past lives reveal who I still am \n \nDiana Mitchell\nTherapist\, Supervisor and Mediator\n\n  \nExistential thinking tells us that we are not fixed selves – we are who we are in relation to our context and to others. We also believe that our past does not cause us to be who we are. It is our unique response to our past that we carry with us in the present. It has been said that our present co-creates our past. But in what way does our past also co-create our present? \nHow do I reconcile my experience that part of me remains fixed and unchanging while change is happening to me and my world all the time? \nI hope to show how my attitude to life is graphically re-expressed on many levels throughout my life. \nWhat does your past way of being tell you about who you are\, and who you think you are today? \nWhen you look back\, what are the qualities that served and still serve you well in life? \nMy workshop is based loosely on my SEA Conference presentation. \nI work as a therapist\, supervisor and mediator. \n\n\n\n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom.
