SUMMARY:BOOK-LAUNCH: Dialogues on the Relationship in Existential Supervision by Aviva Keren Barnett and Dida Mitchell - 4th of March 2025 @ 7-8pm GMT on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Book-launch:  Dialogues on the Relationship in Existential Supervision\n\nBy Aviva Keren Barnett and Dida Mitchell. Introduction by Sarah Young.\n\nMEET THE AUTHORS!\n\nThis Dialogue\, number six in the series of SEA Dialogues\, contains a thought-provoking series of dialogues between Aviva Keren Barnett and Dida Mitchell. The book delves into the complexities of existential supervision\, therapy\, and life\, exploring themes of trust\, process\, self-belief\, and creativity. Through their engaging written conversations\, Aviva and Dida provide insights into the dynamic relationship between supervisor and supervisee\, emphasizing the importance of authenticity\, openness\, and dialogue in the supervisory process.\nThe dialogues touch upon the fluid nature of supervision\, challenging traditional notions of rigid supervision practices. Aviva and Dida discuss the stages of supervision\, drawing parallels to the stages of grief outlined by Kubler Ross\, highlighting the evolving nature of the supervisory relationship. They explore the concept of self-belief in supervision\, reflecting on the role of experience\, trust\, and openness in navigating the challenges that arise in the supervisory space.\nDialogues on the Relationship in Existential Supervision offers a unique perspective on the existential-phenomenological approach to supervision\, encouraging supervisors and supervisees to embrace creativity\, spontaneity\, and responsiveness in their work. The book provides valuable insights for therapists\, supervisors\, and individuals interested in the existential approach\, showcasing the power of authentic dialogue and mutual trust in the supervisory relationship.\n\n\nAvailable on Amazon\nhttps://amzn.eu/d/iEEoHxk\n\n\n\n\nBookings will close on 3rd of March 2025. A zoom link will be sent 24 hours before the event. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk. \n\n

SUMMARY:To Hell With Psychedelics with Dr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes and Adam Knowles - Tues 30th of July 2024 @ 7 - 9 pm BST - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:What an event of psychotherapists talking about philosophy\, hell and psychedelics looks like\, according to AI. Watermelons cannot be guaranteed. \nTo Hell With Psychedelics\nTalking metaphysics with Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes and Adam Knowles. \nHow do you know you are not in hell\, right now? What even is “hell”? As in\, what type of thing is “hell”: an actual place\, a state of mind\, a metaphor? That depends\, our speakers suggest\, on your metaphysics. This upcoming talk aims to illuminate\, expand and question your sense of what exists\, where you are\, and how you know. Dr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes will outline a menu of metaphysical delights\, while Adam Knowles will discuss psychedelics and psychotherapy with reference to his current ayahuasca research. \nIt’s nearly 70 years since Huxley wrote\, “To fall in Hell or soar Angelic\, you’ll need a pinch of psychedelic”\, and psychedelics will be central to this discussion. Psychedelics\, previously understood as “psychotomimetics”\, include magic mushrooms (psilocybin)\, the South American ayahuasca brew\, Mexican peyote (mescaline) cactus “buttons”\, and modern pharmaceuticals like MDMA\, LSD and Ketamine. A common experience with such psychedelics is metaphysical questioning or “ontological shock”. \nA surging “psychedelic renaissance” shows itself everywhere from Netflix (”Midnight Gospel”\, “Fantastic Fungi”\, “My Octopus Teacher”) to Waterstones (Michael Pollan’s “How to Change Your Mind”). Use of psychedelics is expanding worldwide\, scientific research is trying to keep up\, and more people come bemused and confused into therapists’ consulting rooms. \nAdam is an ayahuasca researcher and existential psychotherapist. Peter is a philosopher of mind and psychedelic academic. In dialogue\, with each other and with you\, the invitation is to think creatively about your relationship with reality\, consider what else may be\, and what affect that might have on your client work. \n“Psychedelics break the skin on the pool of the self… A psychedelic trip should not mean but be… We are more verbs than nouns\, a process more than an operation.” \n– Ten Trips – a psychedelic adventure by Andy Mitchell. \n  \n \n \nDr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes\nDr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes is a Philosopher of Mind and Metaphysics who specializes in the thought of Whitehead\, Spinoza\, Nietzsche\, and Bergson – and in fields pertaining to panpsychism\, pantheism\, mental causation\, and altered states of consciousness. He is a lecturer at The University of Exeter where he is a lead on the new postgraduate courses in Psychedelics: Mind\, Medicine\, and Culture. Peter is co-director of Europe’s largest psychedelics conference\, Breaking Convention\, and is on the board of breathwork charity Dreamshadow. \nPeter is the author of Noumenautics (2015)\, Modes of Sentience (2021)\, co-editor and contributor of Bloomsbury’s Philosophy and Psychedelics (2022)\, the TEDx Talker on ‘psychedelics and consciousness‘\, and he is inspiration to the recreation of inhuman philosopher Marvel Superhero\, Karnak. \nhttps://x.com/PeterSjostedtH \nhttps://www.philosopher.eu/ \n\nAdam Knowles\nAdam Knowles is researching experiences of ayahuasca with qualitative methods for a PhD at Birkbeck\, University of London\, alongside collaborators from King’s College London\, the Ayahuasca Foundation (Peru) and Onaya. Adam is an existential psychotherapist in private practice and a lecturer in psychotherapy & counselling at Regent’s University London. Adam’s ayahuasca research won the prize for Social Sciences at Breaking Convention 2019 and he has presented at conferences including the SEA\, at psychedelic societies in the UK and Estonia\, and on YouTube. In response to the recent BACP ban on therapists describing their work as “psychedelic” (as in “psychedelic integration”)\, Adam submitted an open letter of critique\, signed by hundreds of therapists and others. \nAdam is a past volunteer at PsyCare (drug harm reduction) and the Chacruna Institute (decolonisation and social justice)\, and a current member of both the Institute of Psychedelic Therapy (IPT) and the International Psychedelic Action Network (IPAN). \nhttps://x.com/therapymind \nhttps://www.adamknowles.co.uk/ \n  \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Inner Velocities and Sustainable Transitions - Devang Vaidya - 25th of July 2024 @ 5 pm - 7 pm BST - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Inner Velocities and Sustainable Transitions \n \nDevang Vaidya \nThis seminar on therapeutic transformation draws upon two unconventional sources. One is a short but critical flight protocol that the pilot and co-pilot of any aircraft are required to follow in moments immediately prior to take-off. The other is a related dream I’ve frequently had of being on a plane that’s heading out on a runway. What can we learn about existential change by juxtaposing a standard aeronautical procedure with the uncanny synchronicity of one person’s dream? Let’s see. \nI propose that existential transitions occur in a condition of intensity. They require a minimum velocity that also must not be exceeded. The take-off protocol shows the importance of respecting the physical limits of tolerance determined by a dynamic interplay of complex environmental factors. The dream portrays a condition of failure that is potentially meaningful beyond the psyche of the individual dreamer. Together\, they show possible ways of mapping ‘lines of flight’ in moments that are ripe for profound and enduring change. \nThe seminar explores idiosyncratic dimensions of reflexivity as a kind of ethical competence that can be crucial in moments of affective turbulence and existential uncertainty. I will restrain my proposal with a caveat that this level of existence-oriented work is fraught with anxiety and doubt. Yet\, it is an ideal that can prove fruitful to remain well-oriented to\, without attaining absolute mastery over it. \nDo join us if you’ve the inclination and the time. Kierkegaard promises to come along with some salutary edification\, bringing an unusual accomplice in tow\, Gilles Deleuze\, with some light refreshments. \n  \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:BEING & TIME the MUSICAL - Tuesday June 11th 7-9pm UK time on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:BEING & TIME the MUSICAL\nTuesday June 11th 7-9pm UK time on Zoom \nThe SEA is inviting you to a special showing of \n“Being & Time the Musical”\, \noriginally performed in June 2007 at Regents University.\nFeaturing: Emmy Van Deurzen\, Mike Harding\, Ernesto Spinelli and many others. \n  \nIntroduction by Ernesto Spinelli \nThe original video of Being and Time the Musical was discovered 17 years later.\nThe quality was very poor and the sound often unintelligible. Although some parts\nwere lost\, most of it was edited and restored\, and it is now ready to be shared by the\nSEA as a testimony of the spirit that animated those days at Regents.\nStudying Existential philosophy as the basis on which we build our practice\, can be\ndaunting and at times even irritating. Yet it is the contact between the philosophy and\nthe student that creates their identity.\nPhilosophy is out there not necessarily to be read and remembered in its complex\nand convoluted style\, but perhaps most of all\, to bring out the philosopher who\nresides inside all of us.\nHumour\, in this case\, is the magic bridge that links the writer with the reader and\nallows us to laugh\, enjoy and\, for a moment\, engage with lightness and playfulness. \n   \n(Photos courtesy of Anthony Venditti) \n  \nRead Grant Bartley’s article published on Philosophy Now\, September/October\n2007.\nhttps://philosophynow.org/issues/63/Being_and_Time_-_The_Musical

SUMMARY:EXISTENTIALISM AND AGEISM. Stella Duffy 5th June 2024 7-9pm UK time on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Existentialism and Ageism \nStella Duffy \nAt sixty-five one is not merely twenty years older than one was at forty-five. One has exchanged an indefinite future – and one has a tendency to look upon it as infinite – for a finite future. (de Beauvoir\, The Coming of Age\, 1970/1996\, p. 378) \nAgeism is rife in our culture\, arguably it has always been so\, Shakespeare’s seventh age of man – “sans teeth\, sans eyes\, sans taste\, sans everything” – hardly speaks of a well-rounded and fully lived old age. In the 21st century\, ageing often carries an imperative to remain forever young and fit\, lest we become a burden on the health system\, our loved ones\, and future generations. \nWhat age is old? Unless we are aiming to be 110\, can 55 really be ‘midlife’? And if naming ourselves as ‘old’ at 60 or 70 is uncomfortable\, what does that say about our internalised ageism? \nThis event will consider the value of taking an existential approach to ageing and ageism in our work with clients and in daily life. \nBring your youthful vigour\, your aged wisdom\, and everything in between\, for an engaging and experiential conversation about what the numbers really mean. \n \nStella Duffy has recently completed a doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and her research is in the embodied experience of postmenopause. Alongside her psychotherapy practice\, she is the award-winning writer of seventeen novels\, over seventy short stories and fifteen plays\, and worked in theatre for over thirty-five years as an actor\, director\, and improvisor. The co-founder and\, for eight years\, the co-director of Fun Palaces working with communities and inclusion across the UK\, Stella has been active in equalities and diversity work in the arts and LGBTQ+ communities for many decades. She is also a yoga teacher\, leading regular workshops in yoga for writing.

SUMMARY:Purity of heart is to will one thing - Kierkegaard Seminar Series - Therapeutic work in intimate relationships - Seminar 2: Repentance as love’s excellence: The aesthetics and ethics of ‘making good’ - Devang Vaidya - 9th of May 2024 @ 5 pm - 7 pm UK time - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Purity of heart is to will one thing\n\nKierkegaard Seminar Series \nTherapeutic work in intimate relationships \nDevang Vaidya\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDevang Vaidya is a person-centred existential therapist\, supervisor\, and lecturer based in London. His research interests include elaborating Roger’s theory in the context of Kierkegaard’s existential philosophy\, psychoanalysis\, the arts\, and contemporary critical thought. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe purity of heart is to will one thing\, writes Kierkegaard in one of his staggeringly beautiful upbuilding discourses. This one thing to will is simply\, the good. But what is good? Since antiquity\, thinkers have debated on the nature of good. This has lead to unrestrained commitment to all kinds of belief systems – philosophical concepts\, moral theories\, religious doctrines\, societal norms\, psychological formulas\, and scientific research. Many of us in the present age settle on a confusion of such ideas that are quite often too abstract to put into practice consistently\, especially when it comes to relating to our intimate others. \nFor this series of seminars I will propose that it is not necessary to define the concept of good. Rather we can approach it is acts – or as Kierkegaard calls them ‘works of love’. Good then means good acts. Kierkegaard’s interest in the subject of the good is religious and rooted in the Biblical commandment: ‘love thy neighbour as thy self’. How are we to mediate between the dialectical paradox of self-love and Other-love? What does neighbour mean in the context of our intimate relations? Who is a neighbour? If we are to love our neighbours as ourselves\, does this not circle back to our loving ourselves as though we are our own neighbours? \nMost of all\, how should we contend with the tragic dimension of existence that continually shows that we often do not do\, cannot do\, or simply will not do\, what we ought to do. Willing the good\, loving oneself and others: this is a tall order and most of us humans will face spectacular defeats along the way of striving for this unattainable ideal. And yet\, I will argue\, there is hope\, radical hope\, what Kierkegaard refers to as the ‘expectancy of faith’\, yes\, even for us moderns who have signed up to the idea that God is dead. \nIn a series of short seminars I will explore some of these themes based on actual examples from real life case-studies. \nSeminar 2: Repentance as love’s excellence: The aesthetics and ethics of ‘making good’ \nAt a recent Kierkegaard workshop on one of his upbuilding discourse titled “The purity of heart is to will one thing”\, which means to will the good\, one participant quipped: “No shit\, Sherlock! Now tell us\, what the hell do you mean by good?” \nIn today’s seminar I will propose a Kierkegaardian answer. Good is not some philosophical concept of good. It is simply underpinning oneself with the resolute will to make good. The will to make good\, I will argue\, is rooted in the human capacity for remorse. Remorse is based in affect. Remorse is also relational. Responding to remorse in us runs parallel to responding with remorse to others. Remorse can lead to a transformed will that can propel us to acts of repentance\, acts of making good\, as works of proper self-love and Other-love. \nI will conclude on an ironic note that ultimately none of us are really up to this task to perfection since we humans often do not do\, will not do\, or even cannot do\, what we ought to do. We might however maintain the ‘humble courage’ to remain striving without deceiving ourselves into believing in our own absolute power of ethical sovereignty.

SUMMARY:Purity of heart is to will one thing - Kierkegaard Seminar Series - Seminar 1: Sexuality beyond consensual seduction: The erotic abyss & the abysmal erotic - Devang Vaidya - 11th of April 2024 @ 5 pm - 7 pm GMT - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Purity of heart is to will one thing\n\nKierkegaard Seminar Series \nTherapeutic work in intimate relationships \nDevang Vaidya \n\n\n\nDevang Vaidya is a person-centred existential therapist\, supervisor\, and lecturer based in London. His research interests include elaborating Roger’s theory in the context of Kierkegaard’s existential philosophy\, psychoanalysis\, the arts\, and contemporary critical thought.\n\n\n\n\nThe purity of heart is to will one thing\, writes Kierkegaard in one of his staggeringly beautiful upbuilding discourses. \n  \nSeminar 1: Sexuality beyond consensual seduction: The erotic abyss & the abysmal erotic\n \nDrawing upon one of the most disturbing and yet strangely lyrical pieces in existential literature I will first introduce Johannes\, Kierkegaard’s notorious diarist and seducer. A self-styled eroticist\,  Johannes seems genuinely convinced that his seduction of the young woman\, Cordelia\, is for her own good. Could Johannes\, who seduced one\, or even Don Giovanni\, who seduced many\, be the most problematic cases of sexual excess? What role does consent play in their tales? \nThe publication of Avgi Saketopoulou’s recent book “Sexuality beyond consent” raises in its wake a related worry. It is one of potentially disparaging the concern for the ethics of safe sexual boundaries\, viewing them only as repressive or oppressive instruments of socio-cultural orthodoxies. Unfortunately\, this risks undermining the psychoanalyst-author’s own genuine concern for freeing her clients from sedimented trauma-based self-identities. \nAs a restraining corrective\, I will offer a Kierkegaardian critique of ‘sexuality beyond consent’ by pointing to the hazards of its misrepresentation as valorising ‘sex without consent’. My aim in this critique will be to preserve the worth of Saketopoulou’s insightful proposals by defending them against possible mis-readings that implicitly or explicitly denigrate respect and care as two primary conditions of love that are vital for a sustainable and thriving erotic life.

DESCRIPTION:David Boyle offers an intriguing exploration into the evolving landscape of psychotherapy\, enhanced by cutting-edge technologies. Building on his keynote at the SEA Conference\, David ventures beyond the traditional confines of real human therapists and real therapy rooms to illuminate the groundbreaking role of AI therapists and Virtual Reality (VR) environments in therapeutic practices. \nDavid will revisit the core insights from his SEA Conference keynote to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and psychotherapy. SUMMARY:Boundaries and Frontiers - Karen Weixel-Dixon - 29th of November @ 2 pm - 4 pm GMT ON ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Boundaries and Frontiers\nFrontiers are areas of wilderness and the unknown that are delineated by boundaries. \nIf we are too boundaried\, we may miss the messy or creative possibilities that are excluded; if\nwe are not boundaried enough\, we may invite chaos\, or non-therapeutic anxieties. \nThis will be an opportunity to consider and discuss the purpose of boundaries\, both\nprofessional and personal\, that may support\, or hinder\, our therapeutic projects. We may\nentertain notions of how and when our boundaries are immutable\, and in what circumstances\nthey may be negotiable. \nLimits and boundaries are aspects of all human engagements: it can be useful to consider the\neffectiveness of making boundaries explicit\, and to what extent they are adaptable in any\nhuman connection. \nPlease join us for a lively exchange of ideas and information. \nKaren Weixel-Dixon \nCounselling\, Psychotherapy\, Supervision\, Mediation\, Training \nM.A.\, Adv. SUMMARY:2023 SEA Annual Conference – "Back to Basics; Into the Future"
DESCRIPTION:35th Annual SEA Conference – “Back to Basics; Into the Future” \nTimetable for the weekend will include presentations and workshops by:Yaqui Andrés Martinez ~ Todd DuBose ~ Emmy van Deurzen ~ Claire Arnold-Baker ~ Ernesto Spinelli ~ Paulius Skruibis to mention but a few… \n  \nThis year’s conference theme invites us to re-examine the core of existential psychotherapy – its philosophical foundations\, therapeutic approaches\, and lived experience with clients. By reflecting on our past and present\, we can gain clarity and perspective to carry our practice confidently into the future\, we will explore: \n– What are the essential tenets that define existential psychotherapy? How do we remain grounded in these foundations while allowing space for growth? \n– How has our understanding of concepts like freedom\, responsibility\, meaning\, isolation\, death anxiety\, and authenticity evolved over time? Which interpretations still hold true and which may need re-thinking? \n– How do we honor the diversity of identities and experiences in our field and clientele? How can we make space for more voices to be heard? \n– What cultural assumptions underpin our theories and methods? How can we adapt to meet changing societal needs while staying true to existential principles? \n– What emerging ideas\, technologies\, therapies\, problems or populations should existential psychotherapists engage with? How do we thoughtfully expand our scope? \n– What is the role of existential psychotherapy in the future? How can we as a community meet humanity’s needs in a changing world? \nThis year’s conference is a chance to reconnect with our roots\, share wisdom\, and envision how existential psychotherapy can continue to enlighten and heal. We will challenge each other\, open up new perspectives\, and come away invigorated by the passion and care this community embodies. We look forward to powerful conversations as we find our way forward together.

DESCRIPTION:“Looking to read more fiction in 2023? Looking to meet some fellow colleagues for an evening of interesting discussions and conviviality? Then look no further. Over the next year\, the reader’s club will meet every 6 weeks  to discuss thought-provoking books over some food and drinks at the Riverview Room in the newly re-opened Battersea Power Station development.\nAs well as meeting new people and enjoying a sociable evening\, participants will receive a CPD certificate after each meeting.  We will meet on Fridays at 7pm (aiming to end at 9pm) – look out for the dates on the SEA website. Come to as many meetings as you want!”\n\n4th book – The Mezzanine. Although most of the action of The Mezzanine occurs on the escalator of an office building\, where its narrator is returning to work after buying shoelaces\, this startlingly inventive and witty novel takes us farther than most fiction written today. It lends to milk cartons the associative richness of Marcel Proust’s madeleines. It names the eight most significant advances in a human life —beginning with shoe-tying. It asks whether the hot air blowers in bathrooms really are more sanitary than towels. And it casts a dazzling light on our relations with the objects and people we usually take for granted.\n\n\n“That was the problem with reading: you always had to pick up again at the very thing that had made you stop reading the day before.”\n – Nicholson Baker \n\n\n\n\nIrene is a Regent’s University graduate and works as an existential psychotherapist in private practice. In 2021\, she ran the Therapists Book Club which met monthly over zoom for a year. The idea of the reader’s club  stemmed from a desire to create a space for therapists to meet socially with other\ncolleagues and start a conversation over a good book.\n  \nPlace of event: Riverview Room at Scott House\, 23 Circus Road West\, Battersea Power Station\, London\, SW11 8EH\nDate:13th October 2023\nTime: 7 pm to 9 pm GMT \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.
