SUMMARY:Echoism and the echositic-narcissistic complex (ENC). Donna Christina Savery. Sep 15th 7:30pm-9:30pm.
DESCRIPTION:Echoism and the echositic-narcissistic complex (ENC)\nDonna Christina Savery\n\nSep 15th @ 7:30pm-9:30pm on Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\nDonna Christina Savery is an existential therapist and daseinsanalyst of the Zurich seminar having studied with Alice Holzhey Kunz. She works in private practice in the UK and teaches and supervises internationally. \nFollowing her initial seminar in April this year on Echoism\, in which she introduced the key ideas in her book\, Echoism: The silenced response to narcissism\, Donna returns to present a more detailed exploration into Echoism and in particular the echoistic-narcissistic complex (ENC). \nDrawing upon over ten years of research\, in which she has specialised in working with both Echoistic and Narciasistic clients\, she uses a combination of clinical examples\, existential and psychoanalytic ideas and the daseinsanalytic method to bring a deep understanding to the ways in which narcissists and echoists relate and are drawn to one another. Her research shows that each can play an active role\, however unconsciously\, in drawing out the corresponding character traits in others and indeed in the therapist. She underpins her observations with key theoretical ideas from Sartre on Being and The Look. \nDonna will discuss how she works with trainees and therapists in supervision\, to recognise their own echoistic and narcissistic tendencies and to be aware of how these may present in the work\, and how to work with them in a way that is of benefit to clients who are susceptible to these very challenging issues in themselves and in their relationship dynamics with others. \nThe session will be 2 hours and will include a 30 minute discussion. \nIt is not necessary to have read the book to attend\, but reading chapters 8 and 9 beforehand will certainly enhance the discussion.. Click here to see Donna’s book : ECHOISM \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom.  A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hour CPD Certificate of Attendance will be sent to participants.

Again\, sharing our different solutions allowed us to learn and to grow\, enabled us to find compromises and make the most of new opportunities.\n\nWere are we now? Let’s gather back and tell.\n\nThe “Coronaforum” will be held on-line on Zoom. It is open to all and it is free. \nPlease register your presence here\, download the free ZOOM.US platform. You will be sent a code or a link on the day\, in order to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:A Sightless World - Readdressing Sight-Loss with Some Merleau-Ponty Ideas - PAULO RIBEIRO - 28th of July 2020 @ 6 pm to 8 pm.
DESCRIPTION:A Sightless World – Readdressing Sight-Loss with Some Merleau-Ponty Ideas\nPaulo Ribeiro \nPaulo is an existential psychotherapist currently working for Headstrong Counselling\, an extremely busy low-cost therapy service in London\, where he sees clients with complex presentations\, mostly personality disorders\, major depression and anxiety and gender identity. Before that\, Paulo worked for the RNIB – Royal National Institute for Blind People and for Hammersmith and Fulham Mind. \nPaulo holds a BA in Social Communication\, a Master’s in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and he is at present finishing an advanced diploma in Existential psychotherapy at Regent’s School of Psychology and Psychotherapy. \nBlindness and psychotherapy have been present in Paulo’s life for a few years. Paulo lost his sight six years ago\, and in the process of his rehabilitation\, and through his therapeutic work\, Paulo discovered that embodiment speaks in many ways in a therapeutic encounter. \nIn this talk\, Paulo will be sharing a bit of his life and the process of his rehabilitation as a sightless psychotherapist and how he found out\, through the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, that our body speaks in many ways where vision\, and visibility\, in  their absence\, open a world of new possibilities to a being-in-the-world. He will emphasise the process of his rehabilitation and re-engagement with the world through some Maurice Merleau-Ponty ideas such as body intentionality and the concepts of concrete and abstract movements. \nPaulo believes that our current situation with the Corona virus\, where the embodied aspect of therapy has transitioned from body encounter to digital encounter\, mirror\, to some extent\, a phenomenon present between client and therapist when technology replaces physicality – i.e. phone sessions\, online sessions. \nAt the RNIB\, Paulo counselled individuals  affected by sight-loss over the phone. He will be sharing his experience during this time. \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants.

SUMMARY:The Irony of Race Relations: An Experiential Seminar on The Contemporary Discourse on Race from an Existential Perspective - DEVANG VAIDYA - 20th of July 2020 @ 11 am to 4 pm
DESCRIPTION:The Irony of Race Relations: An Experiential Seminar on The Contemporary Discourse on Race from an Existential Perspective\n \nDevang Vaidya \nDevang Vaidya is a person-centred existential therapist based in London. His research focuses on Kierkegaard studies for tracing the existential foundations of person-centred therapy. Other interests lie at the intersection of therapy with philosophy\, arts\, psychoanalysis\, and critical social theory. \nThinking about race is hard. Talking\, harder. In trying to express a point of view\, one stumbles into saying something controversial. It is ironic when this occurs\, but sometimes the irony is lost and offence is caused. Devang\, therefore\, considered four alternatives for the title of his seminar. Each of these relates to prevailing forms of irony in society that are relevant to race: the irony of equality ethics\, the irony of diversity ethics\, the irony of political discourse\, and the irony of social identity. These are general forms of what he refers to as the category of ‘irony of public life’. By irony he means any state of affairs that verges on contradicting its meaningfulness. \nIn contrast to the ‘irony of public life’\, Devang draws upon contemporary Kierkegaardian scholarship to propose a different category: existential irony. He suggest existential irony as a kind of capability or an act rather than a state of affairs. It is a kind of practice that sits between meditation\, dreaming\, art\, ethics\, and encounter therapy. It aims to generate first-person accounts (in contrast to abstract social critiques) of moments of uncanniness in our life. In these moments\, the borders of our practical context are allowed to fall apart. As our assertions of knowledge begin to dissolve\, our individual and collective complicity is revealed in perpetuating ignorance and alienation in relation to ourselves and each other. \nExistential irony involves cultivating perceptual openness\, building emotional stamina\, and welcoming moments of our own de-centering. It can be one way to catch our selves red-handed\, without condemning or condoning\, in acts of what Sartre might call ‘bad faith’\, Heidegger ‘inauthenticity’\, Nietzsche ‘ressentiment’\, and Kierkegaard ‘spiritlessness’. Encountering this fallibility is not easy. The failure rate is high. But it may eventually lead to a kind of waking up that comes with giving up the pretense of ‘woke posturing’\, virtue-signalling\, and political correctness that we have occasionally witnessed after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. \nRather than stifle or evacuate our vital cathartic impulses\, existential irony can include these to show us possibilities of directly engaging with the struggle for recognition of disenfranchised communities\, and our collective emancipation from the clutches of hyper-capitalism and neoliberalism. \n  \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 4-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants.

SUMMARY:A Phenomenological Reflection Upon the Benefits of Kum Nye Movement within an Embodied Approach to Existential Psychotherapy - JASON UPTON - 25th of June @ 10 am - 12 pm
DESCRIPTION:A Phenomenological Reflection Upon the Benefits of Kum Nye Movement within an Embodied Approach to Existential Psychotherapy\n \nJason Upton is a UKCP registered existential psychotherapist and dance movement therapist with many years’ experience in the fields of trauma\, sexual abuse and sexual offending. He currently lectures at Regent’s University and sees clients in private practice. Jason has practised Kum Nye and other Tibetan movement practices for over 17 years. He is also doing a PhD at SOAS which takes a phenomenological perspective on early Tibetan Buddhist practices which involve the body and sense perception. \n  \nI will look at the therapeutic effects of a Tibetan movement practice called Kum Nye. Having experienced the tremendous benefits of Kum Nye during my own recovery from trauma\, I have begun to explore the integration of Kum Nye movement with my client work. During the seminar\, I will give an introduction to Kum Nye and shows videos of some of the movements. I will offer my reflection upon how clinical issues such as trauma and depression may affect one’s embodied way of being-in-the-world through an application of Merleau-Ponty’s concept of the body schema. Drawing upon personal experience and clinical material\, I propose that Kum Nye movement can help overcome sedimented habits in the body schema and allow for a return to an expressive sense of meaning-making in and through the body. I will discuss my experience of how such an embodied approach can be integrated into therapy sessions with clients. \nThe seminar will include an opportunity to experience a few Kum Nye movements\, so I would encourage participants to find an appropriate space where they can stand and move their arms freely. The movements will be simple and combined with slow and fast breathing. Most people should be able to perform them at a level comfortable for their ability. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date. \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants

SUMMARY:SYMPOSIUM : Existential Analysis and Racism - Free event.
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 Shall Not Stop Us\n \nJoin our Zoom Symposium for a get together to discuss different ideas on topics that are of equal interest and liking. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nTitle: Existential Analysis and Racism\n\nIf psychotherapy is anything\, it is ethical.  Both therapist and client are engaged in the question “how am I to live?”\, and perhaps more particularly\, “how am I to live in the face of you?“.  Recent events in the US and UK have foregrounded the issue of racism\, particularly as it relates to the experience of being black in a post-colonial Western world.  As existential psychotherapists\, inheritors of a tradition that is dominated by the thinking of white\, Western men\, what is our response to be?  This symposium will provide a forum to begin exploring this question.\n\n\nHosted by Alexander Morriss\, a UKCP accredited existential psychotherapist in private practice.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a FREE event.  Please register your attendance. \nThis event will take place on Zoom. SUMMARY:'Covid-19 and the financial impact on my therapy practice' - PAUL SILVER-MYER - 14th of June @ 11 am - 1 pm
DESCRIPTION:‘Covid-19 and the financial impact on my therapy practice’\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are two crises going on – a health crisis and a financial one – and whilst it’s an anxious and upsetting time with the primary concern being the health of the nation\, nevertheless many self-employed therapists have found their income has been [severely] affected. This session will look at your rights as a self-employed person\, what financial support is available to you and how your business accounts and relationship with HMRC might be affected. There will be ample time for Questions and Answers and additionally\, if you would prefer to speak privately to Paul about your personal financial affairs then he will be happy to make himself available at the end of the session. \n\n\nPaul Silver-Myer is both an accountant and a UKCP registered existential psychotherapist. Some years back he realised that half of his accountancy practice was about numbers\, but the other half was about the people behind those numbers yet 99% of his accountancy training was only about the former. So he signed up for a foundation course in counselling and the rest\, as they say\, is history. \nIn addition to a small therapy practice he also prepares tax returns for over 100 therapists and therapy organisations\, being in the fortunate position of clearly understanding the nature of being in business as a counsellor or therapist.  \n\n  \nThis event will be held on Zoom. A link will be sent prior to the date.  \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants

SUMMARY:The Natural Ease and Resilience of Being. KEN BRADFORD PhD May 30th 6-8pm
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nNatural resilience is the healing expression of authentic presence when we stop talking to ourself and open to experience as it is. The truth is we cannot always trust our mind to see things clearly\, since the human predicament finds us in the position of seeing through a glass darkly: seeing others\, the world and ourself through projections we may not be aware we are projecting. Simultaneously\, the truth is we can always trust the sane nature of our mind\, which is innately open\, clear\, and spontaneously responsive in a compassionate\, healing direction. A vital challenge for existentially-robust therapy is warming-up to\, tuning-in to\, and letting go of habitual patterns that cloud authentic presence. The challenge of recognising authentic presence is opening to the natural freedom and ease of being as such. \n  \n  \nWe cannot make ourself be resilient\, sane or free\, but we can open to a way of being in which resilience\, sanity and freedom come to us. Within the openness of spacious awareness\, we are better able to assist the opening of others. This follow-up experientially-keyed session is devoted to opening to the true\, innately resilient nature of our otherwise distracted mind. Just this is the unconditional basis for practicing the most robust forms of therapy and meditation. \nThe event will take place on ZOOM. A link will be sent to attendees the day before. \nKen Bradford\, PhD is an author\, teacher and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. Formerly\, he maintained a psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay area and was Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University and California Institute of Integral Studies. Publications include numerous articles\, most recently on “Radical Authenticity” and “Existential-Contemplative Therapy”; books: The I of the Other: Mindfulness-Based Diagnosis & the Question of Sanity; and Listening from the Heart of Silence: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy\, Vol. 2  (with John Prendergast). \n Website: www.authenticpresence.net \nA 2-hours Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants

SUMMARY:Authentic Presence: Buddhist and Existential Perspectives - KEN BRADFORD PhD. May 29th 6-8pm
DESCRIPTION:  \nBoth Existential and Buddhist psychologies recognise an authentic potentiality\, sanity and natural resilience to the human mind. Although in Existential thought\, the notion of “true nature” is debatable and not always clearly understood. Still\, both traditions respect that the mind’s natural openness is obscured by habitual forms of mental-emotional reactivity that become reified into a fixed “me.” The radical thought of Martin Heidegger and still more remarkable insight of the Buddha see through the reification of divided selfhood to the authentically open\, unfettered and free nature of the mind.\nThis evening will explore the Buddha’s 2 key insights into the human condition. 1) We have a deep-seated feeling there is something incomplete or wrong with “me” that leaves us with a sense of discontent and wanting we spend our lives striving to fill. 2) Preoccupied with this striving\, we lose touch with the natural resilience\, innate sense of well-being\, and untethered freedom of our authentic nature. Therapy and meditation are practices of opening ourself to the way things actually are rather than how we (compulsively) think they are. \nThis evening provides a theoretical foundation for Saturday’s follow-up. \nThe event will take place on ZOOM. A link will be sent to attendees the day before. \nKen Bradford\, PhD is an Author\, teacher and contemplative yogin integrating Buddhist\, Dzogchen and Existential thought and practice. Get yourself a drink\, a meal or your favourite snack\, sit comfortably and simply show up. \nThis is a FREE event. \nMay 22nd @ 7 pm – 9 pm Free \nSpeaker: DEVANG VAIDYA \nTitle: DO THERAPISTS’ EXPERIENCES AS CLIENTS INFLUENCE THEIR PRACTICE? \nIn this symposium we will discuss how our own experiences in therapy as clients may have influenced our decision to become therapists. \nFurther\, our way of practising therapy can be a reflection of what worked  – and did not work – in our own therapy. Our expectations of therapy\, whether they were met or not\, can shape our ethos and style of working with clients. Indeed our entire stance towards therapy can be determined in response to our own therapist’s value system. We don’t often reflect on how much our therapists may have taught us about practising therapy. We are likely to be taking up theoretical\, philosophical\, methodological\, and ethical elements that are resonant – favourably or unfavourably – with our own experiences as clients.   \n  \n \nDevang Vaidya is a person-centred existential psychotherapist based in London. \n  \nThere are limited spaces\, so please register your presence here. \nYou will be sent a ZOOM code or link on the day\, in order to join the meeting. \nIf you are interested in being the next speaker on our Symposium night\, \nplease contact:  events@existentialanalysis.org.uk\n

SUMMARY:Existential Reflections on Motherhood May 10th 10am-12noon
DESCRIPTION:A Forum for Existential Psychotherapists who are mothers of children of up to ten years old\, to explore experiences during the coronavirus lockdown.\n  \nFacilitated by Monia Brizzi & Naomi Stadlen\nWe warmly invite existential psychotherapists who are mothers of young children under 10 to join us in a forum to explore experiences during the coronavirus lockdown. Some of us are used to leading busy professional lives and counted on nurseries\, nannies and schools to look after our children during the day\, but\, for the moment\, this has changed. We can discuss your immediate responses\, how you manage each day\, as well as more confusing and unstructured ideas you may have had. \nMonia Brizzi is a mother and an existential counselling psychologist. She specialises in working with issues of createdness and natality – the coming into being of new experience – in everyday life\, psychotherapy\, and art. \nNaomi Stadlen is a mother and grandmother\, and an existential psychotherapist who specialises in seeing mothers. She has published three books: What Mothers Do – especially when it looks like nothing (2004); How Mothers Love – and how relationships are born (2011); and What Mothers Learn – without being taught (2020). She has contributed a chapter ‘The Existential Freedom of Mothers’ to the forthcoming book\, The Existential Crisis of Motherhood\, edited by Claire Arnold Baker. She teaches the Family Systems course at NSPC. \nThis event will be hosted on Zoom. A link will be sent with the meeting ID and password \nA 2-hour  CPD certificate will be provided to participants. \n  \n

SUMMARY:CORONAFORUM-6. Thursday 16th April 11am
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our Coronaforum run\, you are invited to join the discussion and share your experience. \n  In recent weeks new challenges have fallen upon us\, not just as therapists\, but as inhabitants of the globe. We are experiencing anxiety\, uncertainty and fear.  We need to keep ourselves and our families safe\, while also continuing to support our clients.  We may need to change or adjust the way we practise and we may need a lot of flexibility to try to set a new routine that meets all different and new demands. \nRather than proposing guidelines or answers\, the SEA is allowing a space where those can be found together\, as a result of discussing and sharing one’s perplexities. \nThe “Coronaforum” is an on-line forum open to all\, although it must be limited to a maximum of 15 attendees.  If demand requires it\, there will be more of these in the future. \nThe “Coronaforum” will be held on-line on the ZOOM.US platform. And it is free. \nPlease register your presence here\, download the free ZOOM.US platform. You will be sent a code or a link on the day\, in order to join the meeting. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Where It Was\, Others Shall Be: Desire\, Otherness\, and the Alien inside.
DESCRIPTION:Freud’s famous motto ‘Where it was\, I shall be’ arguably set off the entire therapy enterprise on the wrong foot. It established the primacy of the self over and above the profound influences of concrete others in our life\, whether alive or dead. It also led us to believe that the unknown can be known\, that the enigma of psychic life can be translated\, and that what is other can be reduced to the same. \nDespite their protestations\, all therapeutic approaches followed suit\, via appeals to ‘evidence-based’ claims\, the wild-goose chase for ‘authenticity’\, or the fashionable delusions of integration and regulation. \nWe will explore whether a different trajectory is possible\, a reorientation from the self to affect and experiencing\, a move from self-centering to decentering and from self-boundedness to infinity and otherness. \nDrawing from post-structuralism and post-phenomenology\, we will use pair/group work\, movement\, creative writing\, dreamwork and meditation. \nManu Bazzano\nManu Bazzano is a psychotherapist\, supervisor\, visiting lecturer at Roehampton University. He co-facilitates menswork and is an internationally recognized lecturer\, author and facilitator. He has a background in philosophy and rock music and is the author and editor of several books\, including \n\nZen Poems(MQP\, 2002);\nHaiku for Lovers(MQP\, 2003);\nBuddha is Dead: Nietzsche and the Dawn of European Zen(Sussex\, 2006);\nSpectre of the Stranger: towards a Phenomenology of Hospitality (Sussex\, 2012);\nThe Speed of Angels (John Hunt\, 2013);\nAfter Mindfulness: New Perspectives on Psychology and Meditation (Palgrave MacMillan\, 2014);\nTherapy and the Counter-tradition (Routledge\, 2016);\nZen and Therapy: Heretical Perspectives (Routledge\, 2017);\nRe-visioning Person-centred Therapy (Routledge\, 2018);\nNietzsche and Psychotherapy(Routledge\, 2019)\,\nand the forthcoming Re-visioning Existential Therapy: Counter-traditional Perspectives\n\nHe is former editor of Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies and associate editor for Self & Society: Journal of Humanistic Psychology. SUMMARY:SEA 2019 Annual Conference - Movement\, Music & Metaphor
DESCRIPTION:This year\, you’re invite you to be lyrical and poetic\, to be in motion and explore new ways of communicating\, to stretch your language\, your body\, your ears\, your knowledge\, your practice. \nOur wonderful line-up of speakers\, workshop presenters\, panellists\, poets\, dancers\, musicians and out-of-the-box thinkers! are listed below to pique your interest: \nVerity J. Gavin ~ Stuart Hanscomb ~ Oded Reitten ~ Michael Worrell ~ Michael Montgomery ~ Marion Steel ~ Manu Bazzano ~ Letizia Orlando ~ Jason Upton ~ Jamie McNulty ~ Jamie Giles ~ Donna Savery ~ Diana Mitchell ~ Devang Vaidya ~ Angelique Vagopoulou & Alja Lah… along with Andrew Lovell & Robert Taylor \nMovement… “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”\nNothing brings me greater joy than dance.  It is my preferred art form\, it is the talent I am most envious of in other people\, it fills my daydreams and is often present in my night-time reveries.  Above all\, it is my absolute favourite means of movement… I feel unshackled and electric\, connected to myself\, at peace with my being\, able to unpick the trauma and sadness woven into my existence and to express the things for which there simply are no words.  It has been argued that body-subjectivity is far more than an awareness of the body’s position in space as it has both dynamic and affective dimensions\, as well as being a fundamentally intersubjective phenomenon.  But dance does not hold dominion over movement\, and movement – especially in the language of therapy – need not be physical at all… \nMusic… In his book Musicophillia: Tales of Music and the Brain\, Oliver Sacks writes:\n            “Music is part of being human. […]  The inexpressible depth of music\, so easy to understand and yet so inexplicable\, is due to the fact that it reproduces all the emotions of our innermost being\, but entirely without reality and remote from its pain. […] Uniquely among the arts\, it is both completely abstract and profoundly emotional.  It has no power to represent anything particular or external\, but it has a unique power to express inner states or feelings.”\nMusic can be overwhelmingly powerful.  It has driven people to the depths of madness and despair and provided the soundtrack for many a misery.  Yet it has also accompanied us through the corridors of joy and love and laughter while providing shelter\, a sense of community and belonging.  I am aware that many existential therapists are\, or were\, musicians\, professional\, amateur or aspirational\, classical\, modern\, eclectic.  As we grow and age\, what music means for us changes; how we hear what we hear\, (if we are able to hear at all) can be profoundly impacted; what we once loved and craved can become intolerable and sounds that once moved us profoundly can become noise that is utterly unbearable.  If music really is …part of being human\, how do we make sense of this in our efforts to understand the human condition? \nMetaphor… “Language is the house of being. In its home human beings dwell”\nFor most of us\, the spoken word is the sole resource we deploy in our work as therapists.  Figurative expression is often used as a way to convey what we want to say\, both to ourselves and to the other.  The use of metaphor in therapy can\, at times be invaluable; facilitating rapport between client and therapist\, enabling space to conceptualise and communicate abstract emotional states and a platform from which to vocalise our suffering for the very first time in a less direct\, and perhaps\, less distressing way.\nHowever\, it can also be a mechanism of avoidance\, a linguistic tool deployed in order to evade and obfuscate the “real issues”\, where one never genuinely has to be present in the therapeutic challenge.  When a common mother tongue is not shared the use of metaphor can dramatically increase the likelihood of misunderstanding or alienation… though it can\, on occasion\, also provide for rather mirthful confusion.  With its potential to both alienate and facilitate\, what place does metaphor have in the landscape of existential practice? \nAs in past years the conference will take place at:\nNCVO: Society Building\, 8 All Saints Street\, London\, N1 9RL\nAnd be followed by drinks across the road at The Thornhill Arms\, all are invited.

SUMMARY:Phenomenology and the Arts
DESCRIPTION:“The concept of dynamic vitality forms brings together four converging lines of thought\, namely intersubjectivity\, cross- and meta-modality\, the dynamic features of experience\, and a phenomenological focus on subjectivity. (44) The time-based arts are largely about the dynamics of experiences. Vitality forms are the working experiential units. (75)” \nDaniel Stern 2010 – Forms of Vitality: Exploring Dynamic Experience in Psychology\, the Arts\, Psychotherapy\, and Development \nPhenomenology has a long tradition of contributing some of the most illuminating\, multidimensional and practical accounts of art and the creative process. The British Psychological Society considers the existential-phenomenological paradigm as a meta-model and relational framework of critical importance to contemporary psychology and to the scientist-practitioner model. \nPhenomenological research methodologies have long been key to performing arts research\, but despite the current emphasis in the field on phenomenologically-based approaches to health and wellbeing – such as flow and mindfulness as well as third-waves cognitive behavioural approaches – to date the contribution of phenomenological psychology and psychotherapy to performing arts medicine has been neglected. \nWhile the health benefits of art are increasingly acknowledged\, research continues to indicate that there is a high proportion of mental health disturbance and suicide rates in performing artists (Mental Health and Wellbeing Services for Performing Artists: Guidance for the Performing Arts Sector Consultation Paper\, BAPAM 2019).This is reflected in the problems that are regularly seen at the specialist clinics offered by the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM)\, a health charity for performing artists. \nThese issues are very relevant to a phenomenologically-focussed exploration. Phenomenology provides a systematic framework grounded upon embodiment and intersubjectivity which is highly sensitive and responsive to complexities\, subtleties\, shifts and ambiguities; hence it is particularly effective for the type of short-term therapeutic work supported by industry organisations such as the Royal Society of Musicians and Help Musicians UK. \nThis CPD event will consider how a phenomenological emphasis on lived experience may strengthen ethical practice and challenge stigma and the pathologisation of artists. \nWe will address how phenomenology can illuminate new and fruitful ways of thinking about and working with some of the issues that BAPAM strives to ameliorate. We will highlight four main principles of phenomenological practice: \n\nthe view of art as expansion – rather than escape\, defence or sublimation;\nthe therapeutic process as immersion in – rather than elimination of – presenting problems;\nthe therapeutic objective as symptom resolution – rather than removal;\nthe pivotal focus on the present as the interpreter of the past and indicator towards future possibilities.\n\nSEA and BAPAM share a common professional focus on how psychology and psychotherapy may best assist and sustain the arts\, and reciprocally how the arts can enrich and humanise our fields and make us more receptive practitioners. \nProgramme: \n2.00 Welcome and introduction \n2.15 Dan Hayhurst\, BAPAM Senior Manager: Caring for performers’ health \n2.45 Monia Brizzi\, Existential Counselling Psychologist: A phenomenological approach to working with performing artists \n3.15 Daniel Leech-Wilkinson\, Emeritus Professor of Music\, King’s College London: A phenomenological approach to musical experience and belief \n3.45 Mandy Burvill\, Classical Musician\, in conversation with Monia Brizzi and Daniel Leech-Wilkinson \n4.15 Stephen Johnson\, Composer\, Writer and Broadcaster: How Shostakovich changed my mind \n4.45 Miranda Jackson\, Existential Psychotherapist: Empathic understanding of the musician’s way of being: why we need to understand what it means to be a musician to be effective therapists. \n5.15 Open discussion and refreshments. \n  \n

SUMMARY:SEA Film Club – ‘WINGS OF DESIRE’ by W. Wenders (1987)
DESCRIPTION:Emmy van Deurzen \nEmmy has been an existential therapist since 1973 and she has founded several schools and many other organizations\, including the Society for Existential Analysis.  She has 17 books to her name and is Principal of the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling. \n  \n  \n \n“This movie struck a chord with me\, when I first saw it around the time we were creating the Society for Existential Analysis. The story seemed to me profoundly existential and the atmosphere created in the film felt very familiar to me.  The way in which the film gave expression to inner thoughts and fears helped me to formulate the importance of this same kind of deep reflection for psychotherapy.  It gave me confidence in the necessity and importance of that endeavour.” \n  \n  \nArt and aesthetics are inseparable from life\, they are intrinsic parts of it in fact\, and films are powerful expressions of the many facets of the lifeworld and of experience. They have the power to change our lives. \nThe SEA Film Club aims to address the question of aesthetics and art in the understanding of being human and of psychotherapy within the context of our prevailing separatist worldview in which art and aesthetics are segregated from education/work – the former trivialised as mere entertainment and spectacle\, and the latter regarded as the important and serious business of life.

SUMMARY:Art and Existence - David Cotterrell Studio Visit
DESCRIPTION:From 1905 to 1906 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke worked as sculptor’s Auguste Rodin’s studio assistant in order ‘to learn how to see’.  What type of seeing was Rilke seeking to learn in the studio of Rodin? \n\n\nArt is an intensified form of lived experience\, just like human and sentient beings are intensified forms of life.  Art has the power to open us up to a liminal space and time where conventional dichotomies of physical and mental\, material and ideal\, object and subject\, other and self\, nature and human\, etc\, dissolve\, connecting us to the paradox of interconnectedness and to a relation to life based on care\, significance and creativity.\n\n\nArt\, like phenomenology\, is an activity of realisation capable of mobilising non-localised subjectivity. It can assist us in performing an imaginative leap beyond ourselves and reconnect to ‘the otherness that is us’\, to the bigger picture to which we are always already partaking. \nHow we focus on something changes it. Art and phenomenology are creative practices that enhance our capacities to imagine\, form and receive the world\, that sensitise us to its Thou-ness and to the value and significance of all life. \nDavid Cotterrell will show some of his recent works and discuss them in an open conversation facilitated by Monia Brizzi.
