SUMMARY:Why We Tell Machines What We Cannot Tell People - a Webinar by Max Karlin - 7th of September 2026 - 7 pm - 9 pm UK Time on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Why We Tell Machines what We Cannot Tell People \n  \nWe inherit a tradition that treats presence as the ground of all genuine encounter.\nFrom Merleau-Ponty’s lived body to Buber’s meeting to Heidegger’s being-with\, to be\ntruly present to another has been understood as the condition of care\, healing\, and\nhuman connection. Absence\, on this view\, is loss. \nDrawing on a phenomenological study of people who had known human therapy and\nthen turned to AI chatbots for emotional support\, this seminar examines a finding the\ntradition does not predict: that the absence of another subject can be experienced not\nonly as loss\, but as shelter. Participants disclosed to a system what they could not\ndisclose to a person — not because they were deceived about what AI is\, but because\nof what it is not. No face to disappoint. No feelings to manage. Nothing that could be\nhurt by them\, and nothing that could look back. \nReading these accounts through Sartre’s account of the Look and Levinas’s ethics of\nthe Face\, the seminar asks a difficult question of our own practice: if the presence of\nanother is sometimes what prevents honesty\, what are we\, sitting across from our\nclients\, asking them to bear? The discussion hour is open to wherever the room wants\nto take it. \nMax Karlin is a psychology graduate and trainee existential therapist practising in\nLondon and Riga. He recently completed his MSc in Psychotherapy Studies at the New\nSchool of Psychotherapy and Counselling (NSPC)\, validated by Middlesex University\,\nwhere his research used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore how\npeople with prior experience of human therapy live the absence of embodied presence\nin AI chatbot emotional support. \nHis work sits at the intersection of phenomenological philosophy\, therapeutic\npresence\, and the rapidly expanding field of AI-mediated relating. He presented this\nresearch at the World Congress of Existential Therapy in 2026 and is developing it for\npublication. \nBefore training as a psychotherapist\, Max spent more than two decades in\nentrepreneurship — an experience that continues to shape his interest in how people\nnavigate uncertainty\, form bonds in unfamiliar conditions\, and make meaning when\nthe ground shifts beneath them. He hosts the podcast Becoming Existential\, exploring\nwhat it means to practise\, think\, and live existentially. \n  \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:The Therapeutic Use of Photographs: Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography in a Digital Age. Prof. Del Loewenthal. Friday 2nd October 7-9pm Zoom
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, there has been renewed interest in Phototherapy techniques. The field is considered especially relevant today\, in an era of smartphones where a visual narrative of the client’s feelings\, memories\, reactions and thoughts exists as a series of photographs – potentially for individual and community therapeutic communication.  Del Loewenthal will introduce the concepts and techniques of the major approaches to Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography. Through discussions and case vignettes\, how we can helpfully (and unhelpfully) use these techniques as adjuncts to our primary modalities will be explored with the help of photocards\, ‘selfies’ / portraiture\, photobooks and action plans\, as well as by taking photographs. (Participants are asked to bring a photo that calls to them). \n\n\n\nProfessor Del Loewenthal is an existential–analytic psychotherapist\, photographer\, and chartered psychologist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society\, the British Psychological Society\, and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy; and Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapy and Counselling at the University of Roehampton.\n
