SUMMARY:SEA AGM - Sunday 5th July 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Existential Analysis Annual General Meeting 2026 \nDate & Time: Sunday 5th July 2026\, 11am UK Time. \nTo be held online via Zoom. \nOPEN TO MEMBERS ONLY \nWe warmly invite all members of the Society to attend this year’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday 5th July 2026 at 11am.  The AGM will once again be held online via Zoom. \nAttending the AGM is free.  However\, since it is ‘members only’\, we ask attendees to book online so that we can monitor numbers and grant ‘dial-in’ access.  Please book your place using the link at the end of this notice.  Details to access the Zoom meeting will be distributed to registrants the day before the AGM. \nThis notice sets out relevant information with respect to the following points of business for the upcoming AGM: \n\nNominations to membership of the Executive Committee of the Society\nRequest for volunteers\nRequest for motions\nRequest for topics for the Open Forum\nProcedural details on how to make nominations\, propose motions\, etc.\n\nNominations to the Executive Committee \nNominations for membership of the Society’s Executive Committee are invited\, as we continue seeking to broaden the range of voices contributing to the Society’s management.   Being a member of the Executive Committee offers an opportunity to work on the Society’s various projects and to influence its future direction\, so please do come forward if you wish to be involved. \nIn particular\, we are seeking nominations for the position of Vice Chair.  The role involves the following: \n  \n\n To provide support to the Chair as needed\, acting also as a sounding board and advisor to the Chair on current issues within the organisation.\n\n  \n\n To deputise for the Chair at meetings (Executive Committee\, CEC\, etc) and on other occasions when called upon to do so or when the Chair is unable to attend.\n\n  \n\n To undertake or take a lead on key projects\, issues or activities that may fall outside the remit of other Executive Committee roles. \n\nThe Committee would like to thank the incumbent\, Derek Bean\, as he steps down from this position.  Derek has worked tirelessly as Vice Chair\, not merely in support of the Chair\, but also in taking on a significant role in various important projects such as the revision of our Standards of Education and Training and the quinquennial review of our accredited training programme at Regent’s University London.  Derek has been a consistent voice on the Committee in support of making both the SEA and existential psychotherapy more accessible and inclusive.  We are therefore grateful that Derek is seeking re-election as an ordinary member of the Executive Committee\, so that his experience and compassionate perspective will endure. \nWe note that this year’s AGM sees the current Chair\, Paola Pomponi\, step down and the Chair-Elect\, Matthew Henson\, take over.  The Executive Committee thanks Paola most deeply for all the work she has done and sacrifices she has made for the Society during her two-term tenure.  She has led the Committee and the Society with passion\, resolve and tenacity\, guiding our responses to events such as Covid-19\, navigating the changing regulatory landscape\, and improving our policies on diversity\, equality and inclusion.  Paola has led the way on various significant projects during her tenure\, including the overhaul of the Society’s website and related architecture and the publication of the hugely successful ‘Dialogues’ series\, and she has promoted and expanded the reach of the Society through\, amongst other things\, appearing at international conferences such as FETE.  She has always been willing to ‘get her hands dirty’ in support of other Committee members and help out when needed in ways perhaps not expected of Chair.  For these and many more reasons we wish to say – thank you Paola.  We are again grateful\, as with Derek\, that Paola is seeking re-election as an ordinary Committee member\, so that her experience and drive will continue to serve the Society.  Of course\, we also look forward with excitement to Matthew taking over as Chair and wish him\, on behalf of the Society\, the greatest of luck in doing so. \nShould you wish to nominate someone to the Executive Committee please read the details below on how to do so.  If you would like more information on what’s involved in being a member of the Executive Committee\, please email the Secretary at the address below.  Note that nominations for membership of the Executive Committee may only be made for individuals who have been members of the Society for at least one year.  Nominations must be received by the Secretary 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society.  Such nominations will be subject to a vote at the AGM. \nVoluntary positions \nBeyond membership of the Executive Committee\, we are always looking for volunteers to be involved in other ways\, such as being part of subcommittees that carry out the work of the Society on specific projects or areas of special interest.  These include Events\, the Student Hub\, the Conference\, and so on.  Any new joiner would of course be supported appropriately as they take on any new role. \nProposals for motions \nAlongside nominations to the Executive Committee\, proposals for motions to be discussed and voted on at the AGM are also requested. Again\, details on how to do this are provided below.  Proposals for motions carry a deadline of being received 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society. \nOpen Forum Topics \nFollowing the formal AGM proceedings\, an Open Forum will take place where members can pose questions and challenges for broader discussion.  Members are invited to forward topics they would like raised during the Open Forum in advance to the Secretary (the deadline and guidance on how to do this is provided below). \nAll communications relating to the AGM\, including proposed motions\, nominations\, and open forum topics\, should be made to the Secretary at: \nsecretary@existentialanalysis.org.uk \n WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE DAY \nFurther information now follows on nominations for Chairperson\, the Executive Committee\, proposing motions\, and proposing topics for the Open Forum: \nNOMINATIONS TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: If you would like to make a nomination for membership of the Executive Committee\, including for Vice Chair\, please send the Nomination Form (link below) to the SEA Secretary\, to arrive no later than 11am on Sunday 14th June 2026.   Note that nominees must have been members of the Society for at least one year\, and require both a nominator and seconder.  Nominations will be voted on at the AGM.  Should you wish to nominate someone and would like to know more about what’s involved\, you are invited to email the SEA Secretary for further details. \nLink to: Executive Committee Membership Nomination Form \nMOTIONS: If you would like to make a motion for discussion at the AGM\, then please send the Motion Form (below) to the SEA Secretary.  The motion will need to be seconded by another SEA member\, and will be set as an agenda item for the AGM. The deadline for receiving motions for the AGM is 11am on Sunday 14th June 2026. \nLink to: Motion Form \nOPEN FORUM: A members open forum will follow the AGM.  If you would like to discuss a specific topic\, please send brief details to the SEA secretary by Sunday 14th June 2026.

Not all SEA members are registered in the UK as psychotherapists\, but all our members are nevertheless stakeholders in this important conversation\, and as such have also been invited to submit their views\, here: https://www.pcpb.org.uk/about-partnership/policy-and-engagement/commission-on-the-future-of-counselling-and-psychotherapy-professions/#Submitting%20evidence \nAs a professional body\, the SEA is also planning to make a submission on behalf of our members. As well as encouraging you to submit your own views individually we would welcome any input and direction around what should be included in the SEA submission. \nThe call for evidence is looking at four thematic areas: \nState of the sector \nWhat experience and/or evidence do you have about how counselling and psychotherapy positively contributes to mental health support across the UK? \nRegulation of the professions \nFollowing increased political and public attention on counselling and psychotherapy and how the professions are regulated\, the Commission for the Future of Counselling and Psychotherapy has included regulation within its scope. \nEvidence and research \nHow can existing research be better used to show the value of counselling and psychotherapy? \nFuture of the professions \nWhat are the biggest opportunities and threats for counselling and psychotherapy over the next five years? \nThis is an important consultation and we strongly encourage you to engage\, to ensure that your voice and the voice(s) of existential psychotherapy are heard. \nWe welcome written submissions by email for those who either cannot attend the event or would prefer to put something in writing. The deadline for these emails is 12noon on Sunday 15th March.

SUMMARY:Existential Therapy and CBT: Can there be a relationship? A Webinar by Dr Michael Worrell - Wednesday 4th February 2026 – 7 pm to 9 pm UK time on ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Existential Therapy and CBT: Can there be a relationship? \n\nExistential therapy and CBT are in many respects in conflict and competition with each other. In this talk I will consider the inter-relation between ET and CBT from the perspective of a couple therapist engaged with an unlikely\, highly conflict prone\, and avoidant couple.\nThis talk is based upon my recently published book “CBT and Existential Therapy: Theory\, Philosophy and Therapy”. I will discuss my view that underlying the apparent and very real areas of divergence and conflict\, there are also underlying commonalities and points of potentially fruitful dialogue.\nMy aim is to present\, hopefully accurately\, the wide range of divergent approaches within the family of CBT. This includes perspectives that are highly divergent with the aims and ‘image of the human’’ expressed within ET as well as those versions that have come substantially close to those of ET.\nThis talk will hopefully also be of practice interest to those within the ET field who are or wish to work within NHS services where there is an increasing emphasis on issues such as evidence based practice\, managerialism and Audit culture.\n\n\n\n\nDr Michael Worrell is a UKCP Registered Existential Psychotherapist as well as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and BABCP accredited CBT therapist. He has for the past 30 years worked within the NHS in London and for almost 20 year has worked to design and deliver various training courses in psychological therapies. He has a particular focus on training individual therapists to work with couples and developing an existential perspective on work with couples.\n  \n  \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Philosophical Reflections and Insights for Psychotherapists - A Workshop Series by Dr Steven Segal - Fifth Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Philosophical Reflections and Insights for Psychotherapists \nHow Can We Use the Combination of Philosophy and Psychotherapy to Enhance Our Therapeutic Wisdom? \nPhilosophy offers a rich understanding of the role of emotions in responding to mental health challenges. Moods such as anxiety\, perplexity\, despair\, confusion\, curiosity\, and wonder are triggers that sustain both philosophical reflection and psychotherapy. Philosophical reflection adds to the modules\, skills\, wisdom\, and attunement of psychotherapeutic approaches. It provides frameworks for enabling clients to turn moods into opportunities to see\, do\, and be in the world in much more fulfilling ways. Each philosopher provides a process for working with healing and transformation. For example\, Socratic questioning is a process of dealing with perplexity\, while Martin Heidegger shows how phenomenology and hermeneutics provide processes for working with questions of meaning\, anxiety\, and the point of existence. \nThis workshop series will provide psychologists and psychotherapists with a set of philosophical frameworks and skills to work effectively with disruptive moods that clients bring into therapy. This series will explore the therapeutic dimension of each philosophy by appreciating the lived experience of the moods of disruption. \nPhilosophy offers additional ways of understanding and responding to them. It does so by providing frameworks that help clients work with their experiences in ways that lead to greater psychological flexibility\, insight\, and change. Each philosophical tradition provides different ways of engaging with emotions and disruption: \n\nSocratic questioning helps clients develop insight by working through perplexity\nAristotle’s notion of practical wisdom provides a framework within which to embrace the uncertainties\, complexities and contingencies of the lived experience of therapy\nKierkegaard’s understanding of anxiety as an adventure provides a framework through which to consider the relation between action\, insight and reflection in therapy\nNietzsche provides a framework in which to overcome and become ourselves by embracing moods of nihilism\nHeidegger allows us to see existential anxiety as an opportunity to transform our ways of being-in-the-world.\n\nThe series will introduce psychologists and psychotherapists to the therapeutic dimension of different philosophical traditions by focusing on how they engage with the lived experience of moods of disruption. Rather than treating philosophy as an abstract discipline\, we will explore how it can enrich therapeutic practice by providing additional ways of helping clients engage with their experiences and find new possibilities for action\, meaning\, and self-understanding. \nFormat of sessions: Each 2-hour session will begin with an overview of the therapeutic importance of the philosopher under consideration. A case history of s client or therapist will then be presented. This will be followed by a discussion of the case history. Finally\, the discussion will be integrated into a deeper understanding of the therapeutic significance of the philosopher. \n \nDr Steven Segal is a psychotherapist and academic consultant. He has a PhD in Philosophy of Education which allows him to bring a depth and breadth of philosophy into his practices. He has published two books\, edited two books and has written over 30 peer reviewed articles in a diverse range of disciplines including leadership\, education\, philosophy\, psychotherapy and research. He was an associate professor at Macquarie University where he spent twenty-two years joyfully engaging MBA students in the delights of philosophy and psychotherapy. \n  \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uK.

SUMMARY:Philosophical Reflections and Insights for Psychotherapists -
DESCRIPTION:Philosophical Reflections and Insights for Psychotherapists \nHow Can We Use the Combination of Philosophy and Psychotherapy to Enhance Our Therapeutic Wisdom?

SUMMARY:SEA AGM - SUNDAY 6th JULY 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Society for Existential Analysis Annual General Meeting 2025 \nDate & Time: Sunday 6th July 2025\, 11am UK Time. \nTo be held online via Zoom. \nOPEN TO MEMBERS ONLY \nWe warmly invite all members of the Society to attend this year’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday 6th July 2025 at 11am.  The AGM will once again be held online via Zoom. \nAttending the AGM is free.  However\, since it is ‘members only’\, we ask attendees to book online so that we can monitor numbers and grant ‘dial-in’ access.  Please book your place using the link at the end of this notice.  Details for the Zoom meeting will be distributed to registrants the day before the AGM. \nThis notice sets out relevant information with respect to the following points of business for the upcoming AGM: \n\nElection of Chairperson of the Society\n\n\nNominations to membership of the Executive Committee of the Society\n\n\nRequest for volunteers\, notably to join the Hermeneutic Circular Subcommittee\n\n\nRequest for motions\n\n\nRequest for topics for the Open Forum\n\n\nProcedural details on how to make nominations\, propose motions\, etc.\n\n  \nElection of Chairperson \nAs previously communicated\, this year’s meeting is of particular importance as it will see the election of the Chair of the Society’s Executive Committee.  Under our Constitution\, the Chair serves a term of three years\, and election of a new Chair takes place at the beginning of the third year of that term.  As this will be the final year of the second term as Chair for our incumbent\, Paola Pomponi\, she will not be seeking re-election.  There is more to say\, but for now the Executive Committee would like to offer its heartfelt thanks on behalf of the whole Society to Paola for the compassion\, thoughtfulness and dedication that she has brought to the role of Chair of the Society these past years.   \n  \nNominations from the membership of the Society for Chairperson therefore are sought.  In accordance with our Constitution\, the elected individual will serve as Chair-Elect for one year until Paola steps down and they take over as Chair at next year’s AGM.  Nominations for the position of Chair may only be made for individuals who have been members of the Society for at least one year.  All nominations must be received by the Secretary not later than 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society.  Please see the end of this notice for further information on how to make the nomination. \nThere will be a need to introduce the candidates to members so that they may make an informed decision when they vote.  As such\, nominees are asked to provide additional information that will be disseminated to members as part of the voting process.  This must include: \n\nA short personal statement (no more than 350 words) setting out why the nominee would be suitable for the position and what they would bring to the Society if elected Chair.  This statement ought to include any relevant experience (such as work as a psychotherapist\, previously-held trustee positions\, and so on) and address the key responsibilities of the role of Chairperson (per the attached description);\nAn appropriate\, clear and recent photograph of the nominee.\n\nIn addition\, the nominee may also provide a short (of not more than two minutes) video introducing themself and sharing their vision for the Society. \nFurther information on the role of Chairperson is available here. \n  \nNominations to the Executive Committee \nNominations for membership of the Society’s Executive Committee are also invited\, as we continue seeking to broaden the range of voices contributing to the Society’s management.   Being a member of the Executive Committee offers an opportunity to work on the Society’s various projects and to influence its future direction\, so please do come forward if you wish to be involved.   \nIn particular\, we are seeking nominations for the position of Membership Secretary.  The role involves providing friendly customer support to our members and managing membership records via our website. Ideal candidates will be comfortable with digital platforms\, detail-oriented\, and committed to supporting our vibrant existential community.  The Committee would like to thank the incumbent\, Serena Fianco\, as she steps down from this position\, for her hard work\, tenacity and commitment in supporting our members over the years. \nPlease read the details below on how to nominate someone to the Executive Committee\, and if you would like more information on what’s involved in being a member of the Executive Committee\, please email the Secretary at the address below.  Note that nominations for membership of the Executive Committee (including the position of Chair) may only be made for individuals who have been members of the Society for at least one year.  Nominations must be received by the Secretary 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society.  Such nominations will be subject to a vote at the AGM.  \n  \nVoluntary positions \nBeyond membership of the Executive Committee\, we are always looking for volunteers to be involved in other ways\, such as being part of subcommittees that carry out the work of the Society on specific projects or areas of special interest.  We are currently looking for someone to join the Hermeneutic Circular Subcommittee\, with the aim of taking over the editorship of that publication when the incumbent\, Andrew Miller\, steps down over the coming months.  Any new joiner would of course be supported appropriately as they take on this role.  A summary of the kind of duties and skills involved is available here.  The Committee would like to thank Andrew for the decade of his thoughtful and committed stewardship of this rich\, vibrant and much-loved publication. \n  \nProposals for motions \nAlongside nominations to the Executive Committee\, proposals for motions to be discussed and voted on at the AGM are also requested. Again\, details on how to do this are provided below.  Proposals for motions carry a deadline of being received 21 days before the AGM and must be seconded by another member of the Society. \n  \nOpen Forum Topics \nFollowing the formal AGM proceedings\, an Open Forum will take place where members can pose questions and challenges for broader discussion.  Members are invited to forward topics they would like raised during the Open Forum in advance to the Secretary (the deadline and guidance on how to do this is provided below).   \nAll communications relating to the AGM\, including proposed motions\, nominations\, and open forum topics\, should be made to the Secretary at: \nsecretary@existentialanalysis.org.uk \n WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE DAY – PLEASE BOOK USING THE LINK BELOW \nFurther information now follows on nominations for Chairperson\, the Executive Committee\, proposing motions\, and proposing topics for the Open Forum: \nNOMINATIONS FOR CHAIRPERSON: If you would like to make a nomination for Chairperson\, please send the Chairperson Nomination Form (link below) to the SEA Secretary\, to arrive no later than 11am on Sunday 15th June 2025.   Please include the short personal statement and photograph as described above.  Note that nominees must have been members of the Society for at least one year\, and require both a nominator and seconder.  Nominations will be voted on at the AGM.  Should you wish to nominate someone and would like to know more about what’s involved\, you are invited to email the SEA Secretary for further details.  \nLink to: Chairperson Nomination Form \nNOMINATIONS TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: If you would like to make a nomination for membership of the Executive Committee\, please send the Nomination Form (link below) to the SEA Secretary\, to arrive no later than 11am on Sunday 15th June 2025. SUMMARY:Corporeality in the Virtual World: A Reflection on the Intersubjective Relationship Based on Avatars - a Webinar by Thaís de Sá Oliveira - 30th of May - 6 pm to 9 pm BST - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:  \nCorporeality in the Virtual World: \nA Reflection on the Intersubjective Relationship Based on Avatars \n  \nIn an era where digital interactions shape much of our daily lives\, virtual environments have become fundamental spaces for human connection. Avatars – our digital representations – offer new ways to explore and express identity\, but they also raise profound questions about embodiment\, authenticity\, and relationships. How does this shift from physical presence to virtual selfhood affect our experience of being with others? What does it mean to be “seen” in a world of pixels and screens? \nThis conference explores these questions through the lens of Jean-Paul Sartre’s philosophy\, particularly his insights on the image (The Imaginary) and intersubjectivity (Being and Nothingness). By examining avatars as symbolic extensions of the body\, we will discuss how digital representations influence self-perception and reshape human relationships. The “gaze of the other” takes on new dimensions in virtual spaces\, where identity is both constructed and objectified in real-time interactions. While avatars provide a sense of agency and creative self-expression\, they also challenge our understanding of authenticity\, alienation\, and the continuity of selfhood. \nFor existential psychotherapists\, understanding these dynamics is crucial. The virtual world is not just an escape – it is an extension of lived experience that impacts emotions\, identity\, and interpersonal relationships. By exploring how individuals navigate intersubjectivity in digital spaces\, we can develop therapeutic approaches that address the anxieties\, disconnections\, and self-explorations emerging from this new existential landscape. This discussion invites us to rethink presence\, recognition\, and what it means to be fully human in an increasingly digital world. \n  \n \nThaís de Sá Oliveira is a clinical psychologist and a Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy at the University of Beira Interior (UBI\, Portugal). She holds a master’s degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Mental Health from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB\, Spain) and specializations in Phenomenological-Existential Clinical Psychology from the Institute of Phenomenological-Existential Psychology of Rio de Janeiro (IFEN\, Brazil) and in Sartrean Existentialist Clinical Psychology from the Núcleo de Clínica Ampliada Fenomenológica Existencial (NUCAFE\, Brazil/Portugal). A researcher at PRAXIS – Center for Philosophy\, Politics\, and Culture (UBI)\, she is also the director of the Instituto Exsistentialis. Her main areas of interest include Sartrean existential phenomenology\, antipsychiatry\, the applications of existential philosophy in psychology\, and the intersections between literature and phenomenological-existential thought. She serves as a coordinator and a faculty member in the Specialization in Sartrean Existentialist Clinical Psychology\, the Specialization in Psychology in Health and Phenomenological Psychopathology\, and the Specialization in Kierkegaardian Clinical Psychology at NUCAFE (Brazil/Portugal). Thaís is a member of the Latin American Association of Existential Psychology (ALPE) and the Latin American Sartrean Scholar’s Association.
