SUMMARY:Philosophical Reflections and Insights for Psychotherapists - A Workshop Series by Dr Steven Segal - Fifth Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Philosophical Reflections and Insights for Psychotherapists \nHow Can We Use the Combination of Philosophy and Psychotherapy to Enhance Our Therapeutic Wisdom? \nPhilosophy offers a rich understanding of the role of emotions in responding to mental health challenges. Moods such as anxiety\, perplexity\, despair\, confusion\, curiosity\, and wonder are triggers that sustain both philosophical reflection and psychotherapy. Philosophical reflection adds to the modules\, skills\, wisdom\, and attunement of psychotherapeutic approaches. It provides frameworks for enabling clients to turn moods into opportunities to see\, do\, and be in the world in much more fulfilling ways. Each philosopher provides a process for working with healing and transformation. For example\, Socratic questioning is a process of dealing with perplexity\, while Martin Heidegger shows how phenomenology and hermeneutics provide processes for working with questions of meaning\, anxiety\, and the point of existence. \nThis workshop series will provide psychologists and psychotherapists with a set of philosophical frameworks and skills to work effectively with disruptive moods that clients bring into therapy. This series will explore the therapeutic dimension of each philosophy by appreciating the lived experience of the moods of disruption. \nPhilosophy offers additional ways of understanding and responding to them. It does so by providing frameworks that help clients work with their experiences in ways that lead to greater psychological flexibility\, insight\, and change. Each philosophical tradition provides different ways of engaging with emotions and disruption: \n\nSocratic questioning helps clients develop insight by working through perplexity\nAristotle’s notion of practical wisdom provides a framework within which to embrace the uncertainties\, complexities and contingencies of the lived experience of therapy\nKierkegaard’s understanding of anxiety as an adventure provides a framework through which to consider the relation between action\, insight and reflection in therapy\nNietzsche provides a framework in which to overcome and become ourselves by embracing moods of nihilism\nHeidegger allows us to see existential anxiety as an opportunity to transform our ways of being-in-the-world.\n\nThe series will introduce psychologists and psychotherapists to the therapeutic dimension of different philosophical traditions by focusing on how they engage with the lived experience of moods of disruption. Rather than treating philosophy as an abstract discipline\, we will explore how it can enrich therapeutic practice by providing additional ways of helping clients engage with their experiences and find new possibilities for action\, meaning\, and self-understanding. \nFormat of sessions: Each 2-hour session will begin with an overview of the therapeutic importance of the philosopher under consideration. A case history of s client or therapist will then be presented. This will be followed by a discussion of the case history. Finally\, the discussion will be integrated into a deeper understanding of the therapeutic significance of the philosopher. \n \nDr Steven Segal is a psychotherapist and academic consultant. He has a PhD in Philosophy of Education which allows him to bring a depth and breadth of philosophy into his practices. He has published two books\, edited two books and has written over 30 peer reviewed articles in a diverse range of disciplines including leadership\, education\, philosophy\, psychotherapy and research. He was an associate professor at Macquarie University where he spent twenty-two years joyfully engaging MBA students in the delights of philosophy and psychotherapy. \n  \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uK.

SUMMARY:Corporeality in the Virtual World: A Reflection on the Intersubjective Relationship Based on Avatars - a Webinar by Thaís de Sá Oliveira - 30th of May - 6 pm to 9 pm BST - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:  \nCorporeality in the Virtual World: \nA Reflection on the Intersubjective Relationship Based on Avatars \n  \nIn an era where digital interactions shape much of our daily lives\, virtual environments have become fundamental spaces for human connection. Avatars – our digital representations – offer new ways to explore and express identity\, but they also raise profound questions about embodiment\, authenticity\, and relationships. How does this shift from physical presence to virtual selfhood affect our experience of being with others? What does it mean to be “seen” in a world of pixels and screens? \nThis conference explores these questions through the lens of Jean-Paul Sartre’s philosophy\, particularly his insights on the image (The Imaginary) and intersubjectivity (Being and Nothingness). By examining avatars as symbolic extensions of the body\, we will discuss how digital representations influence self-perception and reshape human relationships. The “gaze of the other” takes on new dimensions in virtual spaces\, where identity is both constructed and objectified in real-time interactions. While avatars provide a sense of agency and creative self-expression\, they also challenge our understanding of authenticity\, alienation\, and the continuity of selfhood. \nFor existential psychotherapists\, understanding these dynamics is crucial. The virtual world is not just an escape – it is an extension of lived experience that impacts emotions\, identity\, and interpersonal relationships. By exploring how individuals navigate intersubjectivity in digital spaces\, we can develop therapeutic approaches that address the anxieties\, disconnections\, and self-explorations emerging from this new existential landscape. This discussion invites us to rethink presence\, recognition\, and what it means to be fully human in an increasingly digital world. \n  \n \nThaís de Sá Oliveira is a clinical psychologist and a Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy at the University of Beira Interior (UBI\, Portugal). She holds a master’s degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Mental Health from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB\, Spain) and specializations in Phenomenological-Existential Clinical Psychology from the Institute of Phenomenological-Existential Psychology of Rio de Janeiro (IFEN\, Brazil) and in Sartrean Existentialist Clinical Psychology from the Núcleo de Clínica Ampliada Fenomenológica Existencial (NUCAFE\, Brazil/Portugal). A researcher at PRAXIS – Center for Philosophy\, Politics\, and Culture (UBI)\, she is also the director of the Instituto Exsistentialis. Her main areas of interest include Sartrean existential phenomenology\, antipsychiatry\, the applications of existential philosophy in psychology\, and the intersections between literature and phenomenological-existential thought. She serves as a coordinator and a faculty member in the Specialization in Sartrean Existentialist Clinical Psychology\, the Specialization in Psychology in Health and Phenomenological Psychopathology\, and the Specialization in Kierkegaardian Clinical Psychology at NUCAFE (Brazil/Portugal). Thaís is a member of the Latin American Association of Existential Psychology (ALPE) and the Latin American Sartrean Scholar’s Association. She is the author of A ontologia fenomenológica e a literatura: Reflexões a partir de dois modos de expressão em Jean-Paul Sartre\, editor of Volver a Sartre: 80 años de El ser y la nada\, and has published several academic articles and book chapters on existential-phenomenological clinical psychology and Sartrean thought. \n  \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uK.

SUMMARY:BOOK-LAUNCH: Dialogues on the Relationship in Existential Supervision by Aviva Keren Barnett and Dida Mitchell - 4th of March 2025 @ 7-8pm GMT on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Book-launch:  Dialogues on the Relationship in Existential Supervision\n\nBy Aviva Keren Barnett and Dida Mitchell. Introduction by Sarah Young.\n\nMEET THE AUTHORS!\n\nThis Dialogue\, number six in the series of SEA Dialogues\, contains a thought-provoking series of dialogues between Aviva Keren Barnett and Dida Mitchell. The book delves into the complexities of existential supervision\, therapy\, and life\, exploring themes of trust\, process\, self-belief\, and creativity. Through their engaging written conversations\, Aviva and Dida provide insights into the dynamic relationship between supervisor and supervisee\, emphasizing the importance of authenticity\, openness\, and dialogue in the supervisory process.\nThe dialogues touch upon the fluid nature of supervision\, challenging traditional notions of rigid supervision practices. Aviva and Dida discuss the stages of supervision\, drawing parallels to the stages of grief outlined by Kubler Ross\, highlighting the evolving nature of the supervisory relationship. They explore the concept of self-belief in supervision\, reflecting on the role of experience\, trust\, and openness in navigating the challenges that arise in the supervisory space.\nDialogues on the Relationship in Existential Supervision offers a unique perspective on the existential-phenomenological approach to supervision\, encouraging supervisors and supervisees to embrace creativity\, spontaneity\, and responsiveness in their work. The book provides valuable insights for therapists\, supervisors\, and individuals interested in the existential approach\, showcasing the power of authentic dialogue and mutual trust in the supervisory relationship.\n\n\nAvailable on Amazon\nhttps://amzn.eu/d/iEEoHxk\n\n\n\n\nBookings will close on 3rd of March 2025. DESCRIPTION:Online Conversation Group For SEA Members\n\nThere is a lot to celebrate\, being a part of such an interesting society of therapists where we get the chance to share and open up ideas together. SUMMARY:To Hell With Psychedelics with Dr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes and Adam Knowles - Tues 30th of July 2024 @ 7 - 9 pm BST - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:What an event of psychotherapists talking about philosophy\, hell and psychedelics looks like\, according to AI. Watermelons cannot be guaranteed. \nTo Hell With Psychedelics\nTalking metaphysics with Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes and Adam Knowles. \nHow do you know you are not in hell\, right now? What even is “hell”? As in\, what type of thing is “hell”: an actual place\, a state of mind\, a metaphor? That depends\, our speakers suggest\, on your metaphysics. This upcoming talk aims to illuminate\, expand and question your sense of what exists\, where you are\, and how you know. Dr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes will outline a menu of metaphysical delights\, while Adam Knowles will discuss psychedelics and psychotherapy with reference to his current ayahuasca research. \nIt’s nearly 70 years since Huxley wrote\, “To fall in Hell or soar Angelic\, you’ll need a pinch of psychedelic”\, and psychedelics will be central to this discussion. Psychedelics\, previously understood as “psychotomimetics”\, include magic mushrooms (psilocybin)\, the South American ayahuasca brew\, Mexican peyote (mescaline) cactus “buttons”\, and modern pharmaceuticals like MDMA\, LSD and Ketamine. A common experience with such psychedelics is metaphysical questioning or “ontological shock”. \nA surging “psychedelic renaissance” shows itself everywhere from Netflix (”Midnight Gospel”\, “Fantastic Fungi”\, “My Octopus Teacher”) to Waterstones (Michael Pollan’s “How to Change Your Mind”). Use of psychedelics is expanding worldwide\, scientific research is trying to keep up\, and more people come bemused and confused into therapists’ consulting rooms. \nAdam is an ayahuasca researcher and existential psychotherapist. Peter is a philosopher of mind and psychedelic academic. In dialogue\, with each other and with you\, the invitation is to think creatively about your relationship with reality\, consider what else may be\, and what affect that might have on your client work. \n“Psychedelics break the skin on the pool of the self… A psychedelic trip should not mean but be… We are more verbs than nouns\, a process more than an operation.” \n– Ten Trips – a psychedelic adventure by Andy Mitchell. \n  \n \n \nDr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes\nDr Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes is a Philosopher of Mind and Metaphysics who specializes in the thought of Whitehead\, Spinoza\, Nietzsche\, and Bergson – and in fields pertaining to panpsychism\, pantheism\, mental causation\, and altered states of consciousness. He is a lecturer at The University of Exeter where he is a lead on the new postgraduate courses in Psychedelics: Mind\, Medicine\, and Culture. Peter is co-director of Europe’s largest psychedelics conference\, Breaking Convention\, and is on the board of breathwork charity Dreamshadow. \nPeter is the author of Noumenautics (2015)\, Modes of Sentience (2021)\, co-editor and contributor of Bloomsbury’s Philosophy and Psychedelics (2022)\, the TEDx Talker on ‘psychedelics and consciousness‘\, and he is inspiration to the recreation of inhuman philosopher Marvel Superhero\, Karnak. \nhttps://x.com/PeterSjostedtH \nhttps://www.philosopher.eu/ \n\nAdam Knowles\nAdam Knowles is researching experiences of ayahuasca with qualitative methods for a PhD at Birkbeck\, University of London\, alongside collaborators from King’s College London\, the Ayahuasca Foundation (Peru) and Onaya. Adam is an existential psychotherapist in private practice and a lecturer in psychotherapy & counselling at Regent’s University London. Adam’s ayahuasca research won the prize for Social Sciences at Breaking Convention 2019 and he has presented at conferences including the SEA\, at psychedelic societies in the UK and Estonia\, and on YouTube. In response to the recent BACP ban on therapists describing their work as “psychedelic” (as in “psychedelic integration”)\, Adam submitted an open letter of critique\, signed by hundreds of therapists and others. \nAdam is a past volunteer at PsyCare (drug harm reduction) and the Chacruna Institute (decolonisation and social justice)\, and a current member of both the Institute of Psychedelic Therapy (IPT) and the International Psychedelic Action Network (IPAN). \nhttps://x.com/therapymind \nhttps://www.adamknowles.co.uk/ \n  \nSEA members enjoy a 25% discount at checkout. \nA Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to participants. \nIf you think you have a new and interesting topic to share with us and would like to be our next speaker please\, don’t hesitate to contact our events organiser on events@existentialanalysis.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Inner Velocities and Sustainable Transitions - Devang Vaidya - 25th of July 2024 @ 5 pm - 7 pm BST - Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Inner Velocities and Sustainable Transitions \n \nDevang Vaidya \nThis seminar on therapeutic transformation draws upon two unconventional sources. One is a short but critical flight protocol that the pilot and co-pilot of any aircraft are required to follow in moments immediately prior to take-off. The other is a related dream I’ve frequently had of being on a plane that’s heading out on a runway. What can we learn about existential change by juxtaposing a standard aeronautical procedure with the uncanny synchronicity of one person’s dream? Let’s see. \nI propose that existential transitions occur in a condition of intensity. They require a minimum velocity that also must not be exceeded. The take-off protocol shows the importance of respecting the physical limits of tolerance determined by a dynamic interplay of complex environmental factors. The dream portrays a condition of failure that is potentially meaningful beyond the psyche of the individual dreamer. Together\, they show possible ways of mapping ‘lines of flight’ in moments that are ripe for profound and enduring change. \nThe seminar explores idiosyncratic dimensions of reflexivity as a kind of ethical competence that can be crucial in moments of affective turbulence and existential uncertainty. I will restrain my proposal with a caveat that this level of existence-oriented work is fraught with anxiety and doubt.
