Speaker: Cristina Gordon.
Startled by shame’ – psychoanalytic and existential perspectives in working with shame
Cristina is a UKCP accredited integrative psychotherapist in private practice.
When shame erupts in the therapy room it can be very contagious, envelop both client and therapist, obstruct their capacity for empathy and ultimately affect the therapeutic relationship. Shame is by far the most frequent emotion in the therapy room, which remains largely unacknowledged, contributing to early ending of the therapeutic encounter. What kind of attention does shame demand of us? How are we to be with this feeling in the therapy room?
