Topic: Beyond Doubt and Uncertainty.
Doubt has been at the centre of the Western philosophical canon. From ancient Greeks to Enlightenment philosophers to the modern and postmodern theorists, overarching emphasis is placed on logos – on conceptual knowledge. This pursuit leaves Western philosophy stranded in the ‘uncertainty of the unknown’. In contrast, existence-oriented traditions in the West, East, and Middle-East, are all concerned less with knowledge. They set their sights beyond the known and the unknown – and accept existence ultimately as unknowable. Not logos but pathos and ethos, not objective knowledge but subjective truth, are the essential existential concerns. What can therapists learn from engagement with subjectivity not in the domain of logos but of pathos and ethos? Not conceptual knowledge built on abstract data, but the living truth that erupts in moments of epiphanies and insights, in dreams, the uncanny, even traumatic disruptions? Our Zoom Symposiums take place every month from 7 pm to 9 pm. A host will introduce the topic and present a question for the first 10 to 15 minutes to start the symposium but the discussion belongs to all attendees.
